Desktop Study Specialist

Key Accountabilities:

Role of Purpose: The Desktop Study Specialist in Architectural Conservation plays a vital role in the preliminary assessment and documentation of heritage sites and buildings through desktop-based research and analysis. This specialist will utilize a variety of sources including historical records, maps, satellite imagery, and digital archives to support conservation planning, restoration projects, and heritage documentation efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed desktop-based research on heritage structures, archaeological sites, and urban conservation areas.
  • Analyse and interpret historical documents, old maps, drawings, photographs, and archival records.
  • Compile and present comprehensive conservation background reports and historical narratives.
  • Assist in preparing conservation management plans, heritage impact assessments, and restoration project documentation.
  • Use GIS tools, CAD, and other digital platforms to support spatial and visual documentation of heritage assets.
  • Collaborate with architects, conservationists, archaeologists, and planners for integrated project approaches.
  • Evaluate statutory and non-statutory listings, planning documents, and historical significance assessments.
  • Maintain and update digital archives and project databases related to conservation studies.
  • Stay up to date with local and international conservation regulations and standards (e.g., UNESCO, ICOMOS).
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Strong experience in conducting archival and historical research.
  • Proficient in desktop tools: GIS, AutoCAD, Adobe, Microsoft Office, and heritage documentation platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce clear, accurate reports.
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of conservation principles, guidelines (e.g., Venice Charter), and relevant heritage policies.
  • Experience working in a conservation consultancy or heritage organization is an advantage.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture, Architectural Conservation, Historic Preservation, Heritage Studies, or a related field.
  • Advantage, Deeper theoretical and practical knowledge of conservation principles.
  • 5 years’ or more experience in this field.
