Overview

Our client is a dynamic and rapidly expanding cannabis company with multiple active retail dispensary locations and headquarters in Hazel Park, Michigan. As the organization continues to scale, they are seeking a strategic and experienced Director of Human Resources to lead and elevate the HR function across all locations.

This executive-level role will serve as a key business partner to senior leadership, driving talent strategy, organizational development, compliance, and culture initiatives that support sustainable growth. The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking HR leader with multi-site experience who thrives in high-growth, regulated environments.

Position: Director of Human Resources

Location: Hazel Park, MI (Onsite with multi-location oversight)
Travel: Regular travel to retail dispensary locations required
Salary: $75,000 annually, commensurate with experience

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Business Partnership

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive HR strategy aligned with organizational growth objectives

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on workforce planning, talent strategy, succession planning, and organizational design

  • Build scalable HR infrastructure to support multi-location operations

Multi-Site Leadership & Travel

  • Provide on-site HR leadership and support at dispensary locations as needed

  • Travel regularly to retail locations to ensure consistency in policy implementation, culture, and employee engagement

  • Partner with store leadership teams to address workforce challenges and operational needs

Employee Relations & Culture

  • Oversee employee relations strategy, ensuring fair, consistent, and legally compliant practices

  • Lead complex investigations and provide executive guidance on sensitive matters

  • Champion initiatives that strengthen engagement, retention, and workplace culture across all locations

Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning

  • Oversee recruitment strategy for corporate and retail operations

  • Develop workforce planning initiatives to support expansion

  • Implement employer branding strategies to attract top talent

Performance Management & Organizational Development

  • Design and lead performance management programs that drive accountability and growth

  • Guide leadership in performance coaching and succession planning

  • Implement training and leadership development initiatives

Benefits & Total Rewards

  • Oversee benefits strategy, vendor management, and cost optimization

  • Evaluate and enhance total rewards programs to remain competitive in the cannabis industry

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and industry-specific regulations

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure company-wide compliance with employment laws and cannabis industry regulations

  • Develop and maintain HR policies aligned with best practices

  • Mitigate risk through proactive audits and training

HR Operations & Systems

  • Oversee HRIS management, reporting, and workforce analytics

  • Implement standardized HR processes across all locations

  • Experience with Gusto and/or CanopyHR required

Qualifications

  • Experience in the cannabis industry strongly preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s degree or HR certification preferred)

  • 7+ years of progressive HR experience, including multi-site leadership

  • Demonstrated experience supporting retail or multi-location operations

  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly to dispensary locations

  • Deep knowledge of employment law and HR best practices

  • Executive presence and ability to influence leadership

  • High integrity and discretion

  • Proficiency in HRIS systems, specifically Gusto and/or CanopyHR
