Director of Human Resources

Position Summary: The Human Resources Manager serves as a trusted partner and resource to the St. Richard’s Episcopal School community by overseeing all aspects of the employee life cycle — recruitment, onboarding, engagement, development, performance management, benefits, compliance, and retirement. The HR Manager ensures that human resources policies and practices reflect the school’s mission and values while supporting a positive, inclusive, and productive workplace culture.

In addition, this position supports the accurate management of employee and student records within the school’s databases (Veracross student information system and Checkwriters human resources information system), ensuring data integrity and confidentiality across HR and registrar functions.

Key Responsibilities:

Human Resources Leadership

  • Oversee all aspects of the employee life cycle, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, evaluation, engagement, and offboarding.
  • Partner with administrators and managers to ensure fair, consistent, and mission-aligned application of HR policies and practices.
  • Serve as primary contact for all employee relations issues, providing guidance on performance management, conflict resolution, and disciplinary actions.
  • Maintain employee personnel files and HR data in Checkwriters and other systems, ensuring compliance with school policies and applicable laws.
  • Manage employee benefits administration, including open enrollment, claims resolution, and coordination with benefits vendors and brokers.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state labor laws as well as Episcopal Diocese and school policies.
  • Develop and maintain HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook updates.
  • Support leadership in cultivating a strong, mission-centered culture of inclusion, collaboration, and professional growth.

Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Support payroll processing in partnership with the Business Office, ensuring accuracy of employee data, time-off records, and deductions.
  • Reconcile benefits billing and track payroll-related data for budgeting and reporting purposes.
  • Maintain confidential and organized employee records for audit and reporting purposes.

Performance and Engagement

  • Support the design and implementation of performance evaluation systems that promote professional growth.
  • Manage initiatives that enhance employee engagement and retention, including recognition programs and professional development opportunities.
  • Conduct exit interviews and provide analysis to leadership for continuous improvement.

Database and Registrar Support

  • Oversee accurate entry, maintenance, and security of HR within Checkwriters and student data within Veracross.
  • Manage annual data rollovers, updates to student and employee records, and reporting as needed.
  • Support school leadership with enrollment and demographic reporting for accreditation and compliance purposes.
  • Serve as liaison with the Admissions and Business Offices to ensure data consistency across systems.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; HR certification (SHRM-CP, PHR) preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in human resources management, ideally in a school or nonprofit setting
  • Working knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build trust across diverse groups.
  • Proficiency with HRIS or school databases (Checkwriters and/or Veracross experience preferred).
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
