POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Strategic Communications and Media serve as the senior leader of BBOP's communications function and the primary architect of the organization's external voice, public positioning, and brand identity. This role is responsible for shaping BBOP's regional narrative, expanding multi-channel media visibility, measurably strengthening brand image, and driving consistent messaging across all platforms, programs, and partnerships.

Reporting directly to Executive Leadership and supervising the Communications Coordinator, the Director will design and execute a comprehensive communications strategy — integrating earned media, digital content, CRM-driven campaigns, and community storytelling — that positions BBOP as the Inland Empire's leading institution for entrepreneurship, economic mobility, and equitable wealth-building.

This is a strategic architect role. The ideal candidate brings demonstrated experience managing multi-channel media ecosystems, leveraging HubSpot CRM for communications infrastructure and analytics, cultivating high-level media relationships across print, television, radio, podcast, and social media platforms, and delivering measurable improvements to organizational brand image across diverse audiences and stakeholder groups.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Communications Leadership

▪ Develop, own, and execute BBOP's comprehensive regional communications and media strategy, establishing clear goals, timelines, and measurable key performance indicators aligned with organizational growth priorities.

▪ Define, refine, and protect BBOP's brand voice, positioning, and narrative framework across all internal and external communications.

▪ Manage and optimize HubSpot CRM as the central platform for contact management, media outreach tracking, email marketing, and communications analytics.

▪ Develop and maintain segmented contact lists within HubSpot CRM for media contacts, donors, corporate partners, government stakeholders, and community members to enable targeted, effective outreach.

▪ Build automated workflows and communication sequences in HubSpot to support program launches, event promotions, grant announcements, and ongoing stakeholder engagement.

▪ Use HubSpot reporting dashboards and campaign analytics to measure performance, audience engagement, and brand reach, deliver quarterly insights to Executive Leadership.

▪ Build and maintain BBOP's communications infrastructure, including press kits, executive talking points, messaging guides, crisis response protocols, and a comprehensive Brand Style Guide.

▪ Provide final editorial review and approval for all major public-facing communications and ensure organizational-wide messaging consistency.

Multi-Channel Media Relations and Public Affairs

▪ Build and sustain active, productive relationships with journalists, editors, producers, hosts, and content creators across all relevant media channels, including:

◦ Print & Digital Publications: Local newspapers, regional business journals, online news platforms, and community publications serving the Inland Empire and broader Southern California region.

◦ Television: Local and regional TV news stations, community access channels, and segment producers for morning shows, lifestyle programs, and feature news programming.

◦ Radio: AM/FM stations, community radio, and regional talk formats relevant to business, community affairs, public policy, and economic development audiences.

◦ Podcasts: Identify, cultivate, and leverage relationships with regional and nationally relevant podcast hosts focused on entrepreneurship, economic development, social impact, diverse business communities, and Inland Empire affairs.

◦ Social Media: Oversee or directly manage BBOP's presence on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X (Twitter), and YouTube, ensuring platform-appropriate content that builds brand visibility, audience growth, and meaningful engagement.

▪ Develop and distribute professionally crafted press releases, media advisories, executive op-eds, and economic commentary that generate consistent earned media coverage and reinforce BBOP's thought leadership position.

▪ Maintain an proactive media calendar aligned to organizational milestones, grant announcements, event launches, program outcomes, and entrepreneur success stories.

▪ Monitor policy, workforce, and economic trends to identify timely media opportunities and position Executive Leadership as regional go-to sources for relevant commentary and insight.

▪ Proactively secure media placements, interview opportunities, speaking engagements, and feature profiles for Executive Leadership and BBOP programming.

▪ Lead crisis communications planning, including the development of response protocols, messaging frameworks, and spokesperson preparation.

Brand Strategy, Image Management, and Thought Leadership

▪ Design and implement a comprehensive Brand Image Improvement Plan with defined benchmarks, timelines, and measurable outcomes tied to media impressions, audience sentiment, share of voice, and stakeholder perception.

▪ Conduct and maintain a standing brand audit, continuously evaluating BBOP's visual identity, messaging consistency, public perception, and competitive positioning across all external touchpoints.

▪ Partner with design resources to ensure all external materials — digital, print, event collateral, signage, and presentation assets — reflect brand standards and convey BBOP's authority as a premier regional economic development institution.

▪ Develop, publish, and enforce an organization-wide Brand Style Guide and Messaging Architecture document, ensuring every team member, contractor, and partner communicates with consistency and professionalism.

▪ Translate program data, client outcomes, real estate development milestones, and community impact metrics into brand-forward storytelling that differentiates BBOP within the regional and national economic development landscape.

▪ Oversee development of the annual impact report, institutional one-pagers, executive publications, and high-level advocacy materials that reinforce BBOP's market position.

▪ Strengthening BBOP's visibility within entrepreneurship, small business, economic mobility, and community investment ecosystems throughout the Inland Empire and Southern California region.

Team Leadership and Execution Management

▪ Directly supervise the Communications Coordinator, providing strategic direction, performance management, and professional development support.

▪ Establish content calendars, campaign priorities, editorial workflows, and production systems to ensure timely, high-quality communications output.

▪ Mentor and develop communications staff, building institutional capacity and team capability over time.

▪ Track, analyze, and report on media impressions, audience engagement, brand visibility metrics, and CRM campaign performance on a consistent, structured basis.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

▪ Partner with Executive Leadership to align communications strategy with organizational priorities, regional growth goals, and funding objectives.

▪ Support development efforts with compelling donor-facing, investor, and funder messaging that reflects BBOP's impact and opportunity.

▪ Collaborate with program teams to elevate and amplify entrepreneur success stories, program milestones, and client outcomes across all media channels.

▪ Represent BBOP at regional events, media engagements, community convenings, and partner meetings as an authorized organizational spokesperson when appropriate.

▪ Support government relations, partnership development, and public affairs efforts with professional communications materials and strategic messaging.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

▪ Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, English, or a closely related field required.

▪ Master's degree in Communications, Business Administration, Marketing, or a related discipline strongly preferred.

Required Experience

▪ Minimum 7 years of progressive, demonstrated experience in strategic communications, media relations, public affairs, brand management, or a closely related discipline.

▪ Proven, verifiable track record of securing earned media placements across multiple channels, including print, television, radio, podcast, and digital platforms.

▪ Demonstrated experience leveraging HubSpot CRM (or comparable enterprise CRM platform) for contact management, email marketing, campaign automation, and analytics reporting; HubSpot proficiency is strongly preferred and will be evaluated during the hiring process.

▪ Demonstrated experience developing and executing brand image improvement initiatives with measurable, documented outcomes including increases in media coverage, brand awareness, or audience sentiment.

▪ Firsthand experience developing and distributing press releases, media kits, executive talking points, and editorial content that drives media pickup and organizational visibility.

▪ Strong familiarity with social media strategy and platform management across LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.

▪ Prior supervisory or team leadership experience required; experience managing both direct reports and contractor relationships preferred.

▪ Exceptional writing, editing, and executive communication skills; writing samples or portfolio required at time of application.

Preferred Qualifications

▪ HubSpot CRM Certification in one or more hubs (Marketing Hub, Sales Hub, Content Hub, or Service Hub) strongly preferred.

▪ Established working relationships with media outlets, journalists, producers, and content creators in the Inland Empire, Los Angeles, or broader Southern California market.

▪ Experience working within nonprofit organizations, community development financial institutions (CDFIs), economic development agencies, or mission-driven entities serving diverse communities.

▪ Demonstrated experience creating media toolkits, brand playbooks, messaging frameworks, and communications infrastructure from the ground up in a growing organization.

▪ Knowledge of and relationships within the Inland Empire entrepreneurial, civic, and business ecosystem.
