Position Overview:
George Washington’s Mount Vernon is more than a historic estate — it’s a living legacy. As our E-Commerce Manager, you’ll bring that mission to life online. You’ll lead the growth of Mount Vernon’s digital retail presence, creating an inspiring, seamless, and engaging shopping experience that connects people everywhere to history and purpose.
You’ll combine creative vision with data-driven strategy — curating products, optimizing the website, and building campaigns that turn online visitors into lifelong supporters.
Essential Duties:
Drive Online Growth
  • Lead and manage Mount Vernon’s e-commerce operations across Shopify and other platforms.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase online sales, conversion, and customer engagement.
  • Review analytics and sales performance to identify opportunities and emerging trends.
Create Inspiring Merchandising Experiences
  • Collaborate with buyers to plan and showcase product assortments that tell Mount Vernon’s story.
  • Write compelling product descriptions and ensure all listings are visually and historically accurate.
  • Coordinate product photography and ensure consistent, mission-aligned presentation across the site.
Lead Digital Marketing Collaboration
  • Work with the Media & Communications team to create integrated campaigns that drive awareness and revenue.
  • Manage email marketing, social media promotions, and retargeting campaigns to connect with audiences worldwide.
  • Support key product launches and commemorations tied to historical anniversaries and events.
Optimize for Performance
  • Oversee SEO strategy, metadata, and content optimization to increase organic traffic.
  • Enhance the customer experience through thoughtful design, site navigation, and mobile responsiveness.
  • Maintain best-in-class checkout flow, payment integrations, and data accuracy across systems.
Ensure Operational Excellence
  • Partner with Warehouse and Fulfillment teams to ensure timely and accurate order processing.
  • Monitor inventory, shipping performance, and product availability.
  • Stay current with e-commerce technologies and trends to keep Mount Vernon at the forefront of digital retail.
Key Metrics And Performance Goals
You’ll have a direct impact on Mount Vernon’s online growth and visitor engagement.
Key performance goals include:
  • Increasing unique monthly visitors and improving site engagement (bounce rate under 40%)
  • Maintaining or exceeding a 3% conversion rate
  • Achieving strong email campaign results (open rate above 25%, click-through above 5%)
  • Recovering 15% or more of abandoned carts through retargeting
  • Growing repeat customers to 35–45% of total buyers
  • Ensuring fully optimized product listings with strong SEO performance
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Experience: 3–5 years of e-commerce management experience, preferably in retail, museum, or heritage-based organizations
Technical Skills:
  • Shopify or similar e-commerce platform proficiency
  • Google Analytics and web performance reporting
  • SEO, email marketing (MailChimp, Constant Contact, or similar), and social commerce tools
  • Basic photo editing (ISSUU, Canva) and content management systems

Work Environment:
This position operates primarily in a professional office setting. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The work environment is generally quiet, with occasional interruptions.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, talk, hear, and use hands to type or handle objects. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Visual acuity to read and interpret documents and computer screens is required.
