Electrical Protection Engineer (400kV, 220kV, 132kV Substations)
Job Summary
The Electrical Protection Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of power system protection and control for a 400kV substation project. The role involves designing, implementing, and commissioning protective relay schemes to ensure the stability and security of the electrical grid in accordance with industry standards and client specifications.
Responsibilities
o Develop and review protection philosophies, single-line diagrams (SLDs), protection and metering diagrams (PMDs), and block logic diagrams (BLDs).
o Perform and oversee power system studies, including fault analysis, short-circuit calculations, and protection coordination studies.
o Prepare detailed engineering specifications for protection, control, and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
o Review equipment specifications and vendor drawings for compliance with project requirements including Control & Relay panels, OLCMs, etc.
o Coordinate with other engineering disciplines (e.g., SCS/ SCADA, Cyber Security, Integrated Safety & Security System, Telecom, etc.) to ensure seamless integration.
o Calculate and prepare protective relay settings and logic files for all substation equipment (e.g., GIS, transformers, busbars, transmission lines, etc.).
o Utilize power system analysis software such as ETAP, PSCAD, or PSS/E for relay settings and studies.
o Configure Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), including numerical protection relays and Bay Control Units (BCUs).
o Develop Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) procedures for protection and control systems.
o Supervise and witness protection testing activities, including scheme testing, end-to-end testing, and function testing.
o Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during testing and commissioning.
o Ensure all designs and activities comply with relevant international standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE) and local Grid Codes and Transmission Security Standards.
o Prepare and maintain comprehensive project documentation, including design reports, test reports, and as-built drawings.
o Act as the primary technical point of contact for protection issues with clients, and EPC contractors.
o Provide technical support and guidance to the project team and junior engineers.
o Support project managers in developing scopes of work, schedules, and cost estimates.
Qualifications
o Proficiency with modern protection relays from manufacturers like Siemens, GE, ABB, and SEL.
o Formal training on modern protection relays from manufacturers like Siemens, GE, ABB, and SEL is desirable.
o Solid understanding of communication protocols such as IEC 61850.
o Familiarity with substation automation systems and SCADA integration.
o Knowledge of various protection schemes for different substation components (e.g., busbar, line, transformer differential).
o Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
o Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
o Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Desired Characteristics
o Demonstrated technical leadership and ability to mentor junior engineers.
o Experience in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) environments.
o Willingness to travel to project sites as required for witnessing the pre-commissioning test work.
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: RO1,800.000 - RO2,000.000 per month
