Summary of Functions and Purpose
Provides fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, disaster response, and hazardous material mitigation for the purpose of saving lives and protecting property. This position also supports a wide range of department programs as assigned.
Reporting Relationships
The Firefighter is assigned work schedule determined by the Department and reports directly to the Assistant Fire Chief. The Assistant Fire Chief guides the daily work of the firefighter, with the Fire Chief setting overall work priorities and conducting performance evaluations in consultation with the Assistant Fire Chief.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Firefighter performs a combination of emergency and non-emergency duties as follows:
A. Emergency Duties
- Responds to a wide variety of fire incidents such as wildland fires, vehicle fires and structure fires.
- Responds to a wide variety of emergency medical incidents. Provides medical care to patients consistent with EMS training and certification.
- Respond to incidents requiring special operations and assist consistent with the level of training as determined by the department.
B. Non-Emergency duties
- Conducts equipment, facility and apparatus inspections to ensure safety and response readiness.
- Assists with supervision, training, and development of volunteer department personnel.
- Assists with coordinating mutual fire protection plans, emergency response, and other department activities with surrounding jurisdictions, other departments, and organizations as assigned.
- Will instruct First Aid/CPR/Fire Extinguisher classes through KTFD to public as assigned.
- Assists with coordinating and prepares a variety of plans, reports, presentations, and records.
- Assists with control issue of occupancy permits and similar licenses.
- Participates in Department/Tribal sponsored public events or activities.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position may be needed to supervise probationary firefighters and assist with volunteer firefighters’ program.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians and the reservation.
- Valid driver’s license and be eligible for automobile insurance.
- Must be able to pass a Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) background check.
- Must successfully pass drug screening and Tribal Gaming Agency Level III background investigation.
- Current ACLS and PALS, or PALS equivalent, satisfactory to the department
- IFSAC Firefighter I certification, or equivalent, satisfactory to the department
- IFSAC Hazmat Awareness certification, or equivalent, satisfactory to the department
- Currently certified as a Washington State EMT-P
Certificates, Licenses, Regulations
- Certified Firefighter I (IFSAC or State Equivalent) HAZMAT Awareness. Preference will be given to Firefighter II and HAZMAT Operations
- Current Certification as Washington State EMT-P
- Current Wildland Firefighter II or obtain within 30 days of employment
- ICS 100 and 200, NIMS 700 and 800
- Certified AHA or Red Cross First Aid and CPR Instructor. (or the ability to obtain within one year of hire)
- Washington State Boaters Safety card. (or the ability to obtain within one year of hire)
Other Requirements
- This position requires overtime. Overtime will be paid after 212 hours in a 28-day cycle.
- This position requires work to be performed outside general business hours under all types of weather conditions. Significant weekends, shiftwork (48-96 schedule) and on-call status are also required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Firefighters Physical Agility Testing Requirements: The candidate will wear 45lb vest to simulate the weight of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Throughout all events, you must wear long pants, fire helmet with chin strap, work gloves, and footwear with no open heel or toe. Watches and loose or restrictive jewelry are not permitted.
What is the sequence of events?
- Stair Climb – Ascend a flight of stairs with a Hotel Pack on the shoulder, set it down. Return the Hotel Back descending the flight of stairs
- Tool Raise and Lower – Raise a tool attached to a rope to the second story, hand over hand, then return the tool back to the first-floor hand over hand.
- Hose Drag – Deploy 100 feet of 1.5-inch hose line. Open the nozzle and spray for 1 minute.
- Equipment Carry – Carry extrication spreaders 50 feet, set down then return the tool back to the engine
- Ladder Raise and Extension - Remove a 24’ ladder from the engine, carry 50 feet, set and raise. The candidate will then lower the ladder and return it to the engine.
- Rescue Drag – Drag rescue manakin 50 feet. The use of webbing is permitted.
- Ventilation – Using a large tire and sledgehammer, the candidate must strike the tire 25 times in 45 seconds.
- Dishes – Load and unload the dishwasher
