Job Description

  • Experience : 20+ Years

About you

We know that amazing people can come from a variety of backgrounds, and we believe in hiring for potential and passion. While we've outlined our ideal profile below, we are more interested in what you can achieve and your enthusiasm for leading at this scale. If you're excited by this challenge, we strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don't meet every single qualification listed.

We're Looking for a Leader Who...

  • Is a deeply technical, hands-on leader at heart. You have likely spent a significant part of your career in hands-on development roles. You are fluent in the principles of building scalable and resilient distributed systems and use this technical depth to set a clear direction, guide your teams through their toughest challenges, and articulate a compelling vision.
  • Leads with both conviction and empathy. You know how to set a high bar for performance and hold people accountable, but you do so with genuine care and commitment to developing the talent on your team. You can navigate the complexities of managing a large, senior team with a combination of firmness, fairness, and high emotional intelligence.
  • Thrives on complexity and scale. The idea of migrating and modernising a mission-critical platform serving 30 million customers energizes you. You see a hybrid mainframe-and-cloud environment as a fascinating architectural challenge to be solved, not a legacy burden to be endured.
  • Is a natural collaborator and influencer. You build strong, productive relationships with peers in Product, Risk, Enterprise Architecture, and across the business. You can communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and effectively bring visionary strategies to life.
  • Takes ownership beyond the technology. You understand that a Lab of this importance has significant financial, risk, sourcing, and regulatory dimensions. You are comfortable with financial accountability and skilled at navigating the complexities of risk management in a regulated environment.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience leading and scaling large, multi-disciplinary engineering organizations (e.g., 40+ engineers), including experience managing other engineering managers.
  • A strong background in backend engineering, with demonstrable knowledge of technologies like building widely reused APIs, Java, Kafka, and enterprise-scale database systems.
  • Experience with private and public cloud platforms (e.g., OpenShift / GCP) and a firm grasp of cloud-native architecture and migration strategies.
  • A practical understanding of resilience, security by design, and the operational demands of running high-availability, mission-critical systems in a 24/7 environment.
  • A track record of attracting, retaining, and developing top engineering talent to build impactful, high-performing teams.
  • Experience in a highly regulated industry, such as financial services or payments, is highly desirable.
