The Finance Director is responsible for overseeing critical accounting functions within the institution. This includes supervising accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, travel and expense management, banking activities, grants, general ledger transactions, and student financials. They assume a pivotal role in ensuring the precision, adherence, and efficiency of all financial activities, including the preparation of financial statements and leading projects for system improvements. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of GAAP standards, regulatory mandates, and proactive leadership to drive procedural enhancements.

Essential Functions

  • Direct and oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger activity, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, travel and expense reimbursements, contract and grant accounting, and student-related financial transactions.
  • Approve and monitor accounting batches, journals, and transactions, ensuring completeness, accuracy, proper authorization, and adherence to established controls.
  • Own the transactional month-end and year-end close process, coordinating timelines, validating postings, resolving discrepancies, and ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Identify, research, and resolve accounting errors and variances, including smarter error detection, corrections, and root-cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure all accounting transactions are recorded accurately and timely in accordance with GAAP/GASB and institutional policies.
  • Review all accounting to confirm records are properly and timely maintained, reporting cycles and other associated engagements are successfully performed in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Maintain and supervise the day-to-day integrity of the general ledger, including journal entries, account analysis, reconciliations, and proper classification of transactions.
  • Ensure accounts are supported by appropriate documentation and reconciled on a timely basis.
  • Monitor ledger activity to ensure consistency, accuracy, and readiness for reporting and audit review.
  • Oversee daily and monthly banking activities, including cash postings, bank reconciliations, and resolution of reconciling items.
  • Ensure cash transactions are recorded accurately and reconciled to supporting bank records.
  • Coordinate with appropriate stakeholders to resolve discrepancies and ensure proper internal controls over cash activity.
  • Execute and monitor established accounting controls and procedures to ensure compliance with institutional policies, GAAP/GASB, and applicable state and federal requirements.
  • Implement approved policies and procedures within accounting operations.
  • Support audits and compliance reviews by providing accurate records, reconciliations, and transactional documentation (without serving as the audit lead).
  • Collaborate in the development and refinement of policies, procedures, and guidelines essential to the administration of accounting and related functions.
  • Coordinate and communicate fiscal procedures, evaluating and implementing methods to enhance efficiency and service delivery.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited College or University in Accounting, Finance or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) years full-time accounting experience with (2) years of supervisory responsibility.
  • Experience with use of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting and Fund Reporting (GAFR), and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
  • Experience with automated financial software.
  • Experience in implementation of organizational efficiencies and process improvements that deliver measurable results.
  • Intermediate level computer competency, including Microsoft Office applications.
Desired Qualifications
  • Accounting experience from a government, public sector agency.
  • Certification as a Public Accountant, Certified Governmental Financial Manager or Management Accountant.
  • Experience with Peoplesoft financial software. M

This is a full-time exempt position scheduled to work Monday through Friday. The salary for this position is $81,126 - $91,267 annually, which includes a generous benefits package that includes the following.
