Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for the strategic leadership and oversight of all accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and internal control functions for the Crown Hardwood U.S. operations. This position plays a critical role in supporting ownership with accurate financial insights, operational analysis, and financial planning.
The Controller will oversee accounting operations, manage financial reporting for Crown Hardwood, coordinate with external tax and audit advisors, and ensure financial processes support the company’s long-term operational and strategic objectives.
This role requires a hands-on leader capable of both strategic financial oversight and operational accounting management within a dynamic international business environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Reporting
- Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Oversee the monthly close process, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
- Prepare consolidated financial reporting across multiple related entities.
- Provide financial insights and analysis to support executive decision-making.
- Develop financial dashboards and key performance indicators to support operational performance.
- Serve as financial advisor to executive leadership.
- Lead financial planning to support the company’s long-term sustainability and competitiveness.
Accounting Operations
- Direct and oversee all day-to-day accounting functions, including:
- General ledger
- Accounts payable and receivable
- Bank reconciliations
- Cash management
- Fixed assets
- Payroll oversight
- Ensure accurate accounting for inventory and cost of goods sold, particularly for hardwood logs and veneer products.
- Oversee multi-entity and intercompany accounting transactions.
- Ensure timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Establish and maintain robust internal financial controls and accounting policies.
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Conduct financial modeling and analysis related to operations, margins, and inventory management.
- Monitor and evaluate operational financial performance, including margins, inventory levels, and cost management.
- Provide actionable insights to leadership regarding operational efficiencies and financial performance.
Treasury & Banking Relationships
- Manage company cash flow, liquidity, and capital structure.
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with banks, lenders, and financial institutions.
- Oversee financing arrangements, credit facilities, and working capital management.
- Develop strategies for optimizing capital deployment and financial risk mitigation.
Compliance & Controls
- Coordinate with external accountants, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
- Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements, including sales and use tax.
- Ensure compliance with financial reporting and regulatory obligations.
Strategic & Operational Support
- Support ownership with strategic planning, growth initiatives, and financial evaluation of business opportunities.
- Maintain banking relationships and manage financing documentation.
- Provide financial due diligence for investments, contracts, and operational decisions.
- Continuously improve accounting systems and internal processes.
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor accounting and administrative staff as applicable.
- Establish best practices in financial management, reporting, and internal controls.
- Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement within the finance function.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA or Master’s in Finance/Accounting preferred).
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation strongly preferred.
- Minimum 12–15 years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Experience managing multi-entity accounting structures.
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Proven ability to analyze financial data and communicate insights to leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience within manufacturing, distribution, natural resources, or inventory-driven industries.
- Experience working in family-owned or privately held companies.
- Background with inventory costing, commodity markets, or supply chain finance.
- Experience implementing or improving ERP or accounting systems.
- Exposure to international business transactions or trade operations.
