Forensic Nurse, (Part Time, On Call Nights)

The Forensic Examiner (FNE) is an experienced medical professional who has been specially trained to provide comprehensive care to sexual assault and intimate partner violence victims in a medical setting. The Forensic Nurse Examiner provides sexual assault / abuse survivors with prompt, compassionate care while preserving their dignity and reducing further psychological trauma. Forensic Nurse Examiners are an integral part of a multidisciplinary group of professionals, including sexual assault advocates, law enforcement, prosecutors and investigators who work together to care for the survivor. These nursing functions of the Forensic Nurse Examiner are carried out according to the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy, the hospital’s Mission Statement, the Forensic Nurse Examiner Mission Statement, and the Philosophy of the Departments of Nursing.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Demonstrates skills in crisis intervention for the unique population of sexual assault and
  • Intimate partner abuse survivors.
  • Skilled in conducting medical forensic examinations.
  • Performs a comprehensive medical forensic examination identifying findings and signs of trauma.
  • Demonstrates the ability to collect forensic evidence in conjunction with the guidelines of the PA Department of Health Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit / or similar kit.
  • Familiarity with legal, ethical and medical issues related sexual assault and intimate partner violence survivors.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrates the importance of confidentiality and ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Must be committed to the concept of empowering the sexual assault survivor and be able to relate to individuals and families of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other sexual assault team members, crime victim advocates and law enforcement.
  • Be committed to a 24/7 on call service.
  • Ability to educate patient and family and refer to appropriate community resources and follow-up.
  • Demonstrates the skills in documentation of injuries and other forensic evidence and providing necessary referrals.
  • Provide the victim with prophylactic medication for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) and prevention of pregnancy and any other care needed as a result of the alleged assault.
  • Provide testimony about the medical forensic exam and evidence collected during the forensic exam.
  • Maintain continuing education and competency requirements to maintain active Forensic Nurse Examiner status.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.
  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
  • Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.
  • Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
  • Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the R.N.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Frequently stoop, bend, crouch, kneel, climb, stand, and sit. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Frequently finger and handle objects. Occasionally firmly grasp, twist, and turn objects with hands and fingers. Must be able to hear as it relates to general, near and far. Must perceive color and peripheral vision, depth perception and visual monotony.
EDUCATION:
Registered Nurse with a Pennsylvania license or other Pennsylvania licensed health care providers including Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 3 -5 years practicing as a SANE/FNE nurse. Must have successfully completed SANE A Didactic Training. Additionally, preferred SANE P Didactic Training. Must have successfully completed a Clinical Preceptorship Course in sexual assault nurse examination. Must have successfully completed case-training and/or orientation with experienced FNE nurse. SANE-A Certification required with additional SANE-P certification preferred. Additional Training in IPV/Strangulation preferred.
SCHEDULE:
- Monday to Thursdays (7PM - 7AM)
- 48 hours of on call - Paid at the 24 hours
