Roles & Responsilbility
- Perform detailed patient examinations upon admission or consultation.
- Take comprehensive patient histories, including symptoms, medical background, and lifestyle.
- Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging, and other diagnostics.
- Formulate accurate diagnoses based on clinical findings and investigations.
- Develop individualized treatment plans in line with current medical guidelines.
- Prescribe medications, therapies, or procedures as required.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment accordingly.
- Manage both acute and chronic illnesses across various body systems.
- Conduct daily ward rounds and monitor hospitalized patients.
- Coordinate care with nursing staff, specialists, and allied health professionals.
- Supervise discharge planning and ensure continuity of care post-discharge.
- Address any complications or emergencies during hospitalization.
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies within the hospital.
- Perform life-saving procedures (e.g., CPR, airway management, fluid resuscitation).
- Stabilize patients before referral to critical care or specialists.
- Collaborate with surgeons, specialists, diagnostic teams, and administrative staff.
- Refer patients for specialist opinions when necessary.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for complex cases.
- Maintain clear and accurate medical records, prescriptions, and reports.
- Prepare discharge summaries, referral letters, and case notes.
- Ensure proper use of hospital information systems (EMR/HMS).
- Explain diagnoses, procedures, and treatment plans to patients and their families.
- Provide emotional support and counseling when required.
- Obtain informed consent before initiating treatment or procedures.
- Supervise and mentor junior doctors, interns, and medical students.
- Conduct clinical teaching rounds and case discussions.
- Support ongoing training and professional development.
- Follow hospital protocols and national medical regulations.
- Ensure ethical standards and patient confidentiality are upheld.
- Report notifiable diseases or medico-legal cases as per legal requirements.
- Keep current with medical advancements and new treatment protocols.
- Attend workshops, CMEs (Continuing Medical Education), and clinical seminars.
- Contribute to hospital audits, quality control, and research initiatives.
Educational Qualifications
o MBBS is the minimum requirement to practice as a General Physician.
While not mandatory to work as a general physician, many doctors pursue postgraduate studies for specialization or enhanced credentials:
· MD (Doctor of Medicine) in General Medicine – 3 years
· Diploma in General Medicine / Internal Medicine – 2 years
· DNB (Diplomate of National Board) in General Medicine – 3 years
These are beneficial for working in senior roles in hospitals or academic/research positions.
· State Medical Council or Medical Council of India (now under NMC) registration is mandatory to practice legally.
· Must hold a valid Registration Number / License to prescribe and treat.
