Head Start (Preschool) Teacher Aide

Position Summary

The Head Start Preschool Teacher Aide supports a classroom serving children ages 3 to 5 years and works collaboratively with the Lead Teacher to ensure a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment.

This position assists in implementing a comprehensive early childhood program aligned with Head Start Program Performance Standards (45 CFR 1302), supporting school readiness, social-emotional development, and individualized learning for children of all abilities.

Key Responsibilities

The Teacher Aide supports effective classroom practices in the following areas:

  • Promote positive teacher-child interactions (CLASS™ aligned)
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, organized, and engaging learning environment
  • Support daily routines and transitions (meals, rest, activities)
  • Assist with implementation of Creative Curriculum for Preschool
  • Support child assessment and documentation (e.g., observations, checkpoints)
  • Help meet the needs of all children, including those with disabilities and dual language learners
  • Build respectful partnerships with families
  • Collaborate with teaching staff and participate in professional development and coaching
  • Ensure compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and licensing requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High School diploma or GED (required)
  • Preschool CDA (or willingness to obtain within required timeframe) preferred or Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field
  • Experience working with preschool-aged children (3–5 years) preferred
  • Basic computer skills (email, data entry, internet navigation)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must pass all required background checks (federal, state, and DHR)
  • Must obtain/maintain CPR & First Aid certification

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as needed
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and sitting on the floor
  • Ability to actively supervise and engage with children in a classroom and outdoor setting

Work Environment

  • Preschool classroom
  • Exposure to communicable illnesses typical in early childhood environments
  • Occasional travel for training or meetings
  • Combination of active classroom work and light documentation duties

Pay: $12.46 - $17.53 per hour
