We are seeking highly motivated and experienced Heavy Truck/Equipment and Diesel Technicians (Mechanics) to join our award-winning team. This position is responsible for performing repairs, routine maintenance, and statutory inspections on the City’s diverse fleet of heavy vehicles and construction equipment.
This position will be based at one of our two facilities: 956 Greenbrier Parkway and the brand-new, state-of-the-art facility located at 3316 S. Military Highway. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel-powered trucks and construction equipment. Inspect, diagnose and repair Compressed Natural Gas fuel systems on garbage trucks.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on heavy trucks and construction equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as tires, brakes, electrical and hydraulic repairs, steering and suspension repairs.
  • Perform major repairs such as engine overhaul, transmission repair, service and repair of hydraulic systems and complex sub-assemblies of heavy trucks and equipment. May perform vehicle modifications such as installing or removing special equipment, or other modifications.
  • Perform Virginia safety inspections.
  • Perform post-accident and annual CNG safety inspections.
  • Perform shop or area maintenance such as general clean up around both the interior and exterior of the shop and property.
  • Prepare documentation such as work order notes, repairs completed, parts used, repair cost, and other information.
  • Provide advice, training and assistance to vehicle or equipment operators as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Additional Pay Opportunities
  • $4,000 per year CDL Stipend (90-days after obtained)
  • $2,500 per year Heavy Truck Technician Stipend
  • $3,000 Sign-on bonus (with 24-moth commitment)
  • $50 per ASE, maxed out at $1400, with $500 per ASE Master Certification
  • $1050 per year tool allowance

The City provides CDL training at no cost to employees. The required 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training are completed on the clock – so you get paid to train. Vehicles for DMV road testing are also provided.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Automotive Technician I: Requires high school diploma or GED/HSE.
Automotive Technician II: Requires high school diploma or GED/HSE.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires:
Automotive Technician I: One year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Automotive Technician II: Two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Automotive Technician I: Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL and ASE Certification within the probationary period. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL, Refrigeration Recovery and Storage Certification, basic Automotive Tire Service (ATS) within 12 months of hire.
Automotive Technician II: Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL and ASE Certification within the probationary period. Must be able to obtain a Virginia State Inspector License within the probationary period.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Cummins Insite, Ford IDS, Allison and Bendix diagnostic software
  • Experience with Hydraulic Systems
  • Experience with Trash Truck bodies
  • Experience with Compressed Natural Gas and other alternative fuels is a plus
  • Experience with Fire and EMS Apparatus is a plus
  • ASE certification is a big plus

This position is eligible for a $3000 sign-on bonus, a $4000 CDL stipend, $2500 heavy tech stipend, ASE stipend, as well as a $1050 tool allowance.

Depending on qualifications and experience, you may be selected for either an Automotive Technician I or II.
