Human Resources Generalist

Job Summary

The HR Generalist supports day-to-day HR operations across onboarding/offboarding, compliance, employee relations, benefits, culture, and office support. The role leads on-site recruiting for non-driver positions (e.g., Tank Wash Techs, Shop Techs, Accounting/Office) and partners with our third-party driver-recruiting vendor to facilitate seamless driver hiring and orientation. Success looks like smooth, compliant processes; great employee experience; and timely, accurate handoffs to Payroll, Safety, and Operations.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Own end-to-end on-site recruiting for non-driver roles: requisition intake, job postings, sourcing/outreach, screening, interviews, references, background/drug screens, offers, and start-date scheduling.
  • Coordinate closely with the third-party driver-recruiting partner: monitor candidate flow, schedule interviews, ensure DOT pre-employment steps are complete (drug/physical, Clearinghouse queries, MVR/PSP), and facilitate orientation.
  • Run onboarding/orientation for all new hires: paperwork, I-9/E-Verify, benefits enrollment sessions, agendas, manuals, training tests, swag, Day-1/Week-1 calendars.
  • Support offboarding: access removal, final pay/benefit notices, COBRA handoff, equipment return, exit interviews, file archiving.

Compliance, Employee Relations & Safety

  • Maintain compliance with employment laws and internal policies (EEO, ADA, OSHA, FMLA/LOA).
  • Administer and track FMLA/LOA, return-to-work programs; keep accurate records and notify Payroll/Benefits of changes.
  • Track work-related injuries and safety incidents; submit documentation to Alloy on time and partner with Safety on corrective actions.
  • Support managers with coaching, documentation, and consistent application of discipline and terminations; respond promptly to conduct/harassment/safety concerns.

Benefits & Payroll

  • Administer health, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k) enrollment/match; manage adds/terms and qualifying life events.
  • Ensure accurate, timely deduction updates and handoffs to Payroll each cycle.
  • Support Open Enrollment communications and audits.

Culture, Office Support & Engagement

  • Build strong relationships; introduce self to all employees and maintain a visible, supportive HR presence.
  • Plan and coordinate company events (holiday, summer, carry-ins) and maintain the S&H Swag program.
  • Maintain office drinks and supplies: par levels, vendor coordination, scheduled restocking.
  • Send birthday and anniversary cards; support recognition efforts.

HR Administration & Reporting

  • Maintain personnel files and HR systems; safeguard confidentiality.
  • Update employee handbook/SOPs and obtain acknowledgments.
  • Provide periodic HR metrics (openings, time-to-fill for non-driver roles, turnover, 90-day retention, benefits participation, safety/LOA activity) to leadership.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Solid knowledge of HR fundamentals, recruiting best practices, and employment law basics (EEO/ADA/OSHA/FMLA/LOA).
  • Strong communication, interviewing, and relationship-building skills; professional judgment in ER matters.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented; able to manage multiple openings and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with HRIS/ATS, background/drug vendors, Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace.
  • Discretion with confidential information; team-oriented and service-minded.
  • Experience utilizing AI

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s in HR, Business, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
  • 3–5 years in HR/recruiting (generalist or recruiter) with hands-on onboarding/offboarding.
  • Experience in transportation/logistics, manufacturing, or other safety-sensitive environments preferred.
  • Familiarity with DOT onboarding/compliance (drug/physical, Clearinghouse, MVR/PSP) is a plus.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time, on-site in Van Wert, OH; occasional travel to Bellevue, job fairs, or vendor/benefit meetings.
  • Typical Monday–Friday; occasional after-hours for urgent ER/compliance or recruiting needs.
  • Regular computer/desk work; ability to lift up to 20 lbs for office supplies/swag.
  • Typical work week will be 45-50 hours on average.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000 base
  • Health, Dental, Vision insurance; 401(k) with company match (up to 4%)
  • Company-paid $100,000 life insurance; short-term disability
  • Paid time off and holidays

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
