Human Resources Generalist

Summary: The Generalist will grow in their skillset while supporting the HR Manager in several HR functional areas, plus provide talent acquisition for non-exempt positions. This position is in St. Louis yet may travel to the southern Illinois plant 1 - 4 times per month (these are day trips within regular business hours.)

Responsibilities:

Talent Acquisition and New Hire Orientation (Non-exempt positions)

  • Create/update job descriptions for ad placement. Place ads.
  • Complete initial screening of applicant resumes and provide phone screens, pushing best candidates through to the hiring manager. Assist in scheduling face-to-face interviews.
  • Provide verbal offers and write offer letters. Once an offer has been accepted, engage the 3rd party service to complete reference and background checks.
  • Conduct New Hire Orientation, Benefits orientation, and new associate follow-up for retention purposes.

Benefits and Compensation Administration

  • Answer questions and administer benefits, Workers' Comp claims, FMLA, STD and other leaves of absence.
  • Maintain employee benefit and deduction changes on benefit websites. Review detail of benefit invoices to ensure accuracy.
  • Gather data for payroll processing. Assist with timecard changes. May learn payroll process to become backup.
  • Ensure performance appraisal process is completed timely for non-exempt associates, and management is following best practices in delivery and written comments.

Policies and Legal Compliance

  • Understand and keep up to date on all federal, state (MO & IL), and local labor laws and trends, and HR best practices. Discuss potential changes with the HR Manager.
  • Maintain legally required postings.
  • Maintain/update personnel files and other HR records, ensuring legal compliance and assist with HR related reporting.

Culture

  • Implement approved methods to increase retention, foster employee job satisfaction and increase trust, including increasing positive communication, with frequent associate interaction that will ensure the Company philosophy and culture is instilled in newer associates.
  • Organize and execute employee engagement initiatives such as retirement celebrations, team-building activities, and recognition efforts.
  • Facilitate periodic associate surveys, provide HR support and compiling data.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Admin to maintain “Swag” inventory, ensuring new hires and guests receive a warm, branded welcome.

Separations

  • Prepare voluntary non-exempt associate separation letters and conduct exit interviews. Ensure the termination checklist is completed.
  • Respond to non-exempt associate unemployment insurance claims.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain the Roles & Responsibilities Documentation and Organization Chart.
  • Evaluate workstations and offices to be consistent with current design and ensure associates and new hires have all necessary equipment for a successful work environment.
  • Additional duties as requested.

Qualifications:

3+ years’ experience in Human Resources - HR Administration or Generalist experience preferred.

  • BS Degree in HR or relevant field, PHR/SPHR or SHRM CP/SCP is a plus, or a combination of relevant experience and education.
  • Strong working knowledge of employment law and regulatory compliance.
  • Proficiency in MS Office: Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Effective administrative skills, including multi-tasking, organization, and prioritization
  • Ability to interact at all levels of the organization, building rapport and trust
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Critical thinking and discernment skills; balancing what is best for the associate and the company
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Capable of moving quickly to changing priorities and demands
  • Both team-player and individual contributor
  • Supportive of change and willing to learn new skills, processes, and systems
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Perform most job duties in an office environment. Occasional plant visits include exposure to noise, oil/grease, and petroleum scents, with the manufacturing/warehouse space being non-air-conditioned.
