The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the **Numu (Northern Paiute)**, **Newe (Western Shoshone)**, and **Washeshu (Washoe)**. These communities lived in harmony with the land for generations before European contact, following seasonal cycles and forming small, efficient social groups for survival. Each group’s name means **“The People”** in their own language, reflecting their deep cultural identity and connection to the Earth. They maintained strong traditions, respected neighboring tribes, and engaged in trade throughout the region. Today, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony continues to honor these traditions while supporting the well-being, culture, and future of its tribal community.

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER AT HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER

As the Human Resources Manager at the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, you will play a pivotal role in fostering a positive workplace environment. You will administer personnel policies and oversee HR staff to ensure a fair and efficient operation. Your essential duties will include developing job descriptions, coordinating new hire orientations, and maintaining confidential employee records, all while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

Guiding supervisors on employee relations and performance management will be crucial, as will your involvement in coordinating employee appeals and performance evaluations. Additionally, you will lead the Activities Committee, creating engaging, culturally appropriate events to boost staff morale. This position offers an opportunity to make a significant impact within a traditional, community-focused setting while actively participating in strategic HR initiatives aligned with the organization’s core values.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR IN A HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER

To excel as the Human Resources Manager for the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, a combination of education and experience is vital. A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is essential, along with at least three years of progressive HR experience. You should possess a solid foundation as an HR generalist, demonstrating expertise in recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, and performance management.

Effective communication skills are crucial—both oral and written—allowing you to present information convincingly in meetings and training sessions. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving abilities will enable you to work collaboratively at all organizational levels. Additionally, organizational skills are necessary to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Familiarity with tribal and federal regulations will further enhance your capacity to provide reliable guidance. Preferred qualifications include HR certifications and experience in tribal government settings, along with project management related to HR initiatives.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and at least three (3) years of increasingly responsible professional HR experience.
  • At least two (2) years of HR generalist or HR management experience, including recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration and performance management.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present information in meetings and trainings.
  • Strong interpersonal, mediation and problem-solving skills with the ability to work effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to interpret and apply tribal and federal policies, procedures and regulations and provide consistent guidance.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as requested.
  • Professional HR certification (e.g. SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR) or progress toward certification.
  • Experience working in tribal government, tribal enterprises or similar governmental settings.
  • Experience in HR projects such as policy development, HRIS implementation or compensation studies.
