1. Clinical Assessment & Continuous Monitoring

Because ICU patients are unstable, the nurse must detect the smallest changes in their condition immediately.

  • Monitoring heart rate, SPO2, blood pressure, and temperature (often every 15–60 minutes).
  • Maintaining a strict "Intake and Output" chart to monitor kidney function and hydration.

2. Technical & Life-Support Management

ICU nurses operate complex machinery that acts as the patient’s life support.

  • Monitoring settings and ensuring the patient is breathing in sync with the machine.
  • Managing invasive lines like Arterial lines (for blood pressure) or Central Venous Catheters.
  • Assisting with continuous renal replacement therapy if the patient’s kidneys fail.

3. Advanced Medication & Intervention

  • Titrating (adjusting) powerful medications like Noradrenaline or Dopamine to keep blood pressure stable.
  • Managing "drug holidays" and ensuring the patient is comfortable while on a ventilator.
  • Leading or assisting in CPR and defibrillation during cardiac arrests.

4. Patient Hygiene & Comfort

Critically ill patients cannot care for themselves. The nurse is responsible for:

  • Turning and positioning the patient every 2 hours.
  • Maintaining extreme cleanliness to prevent VAP (Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia) or UTIs.

5. Family Coordination & Advocacy

  • Translating "doctor-speak" into simple terms for stressed family members.
  • Providing compassionate care and support if a patient is transitioning to palliative care.
