Information Technology Technician

PURPOSE

Assists the Information Technology Director in ensuring technology is working as expected for the City’s day-to-day operations. Performs other non-supervisory technical and administrative work to further the Information Technology department’s goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in creation and discussions regarding department policies, practices and procedures.
  • Implement, maintain, and support information technology systems and software.
  • Setup, maintain and support end-user systems and peripheral hardware.
  • Schedule equipment repairs following manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance.
  • Monitor established warranties.
  • Serve as a resource for department-specific applications.
  • Setup network usernames, permissions and passwords.
  • Assist departments in determining needs for product purchasing.
  • Evaluate vendor products and provide recommendations.
  • Ensure inventory of all equipment is accurate and maintained.
  • Train and support end users on device operations and procedures.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot City’s VoIP phone system.
  • Assist with backups of City’s technology infrastructure.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform other related duties as assigned or apparent.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Understanding and willingness to obtain more knowledge of current and emerging technology.
  • Knowledge of network server operating systems, specifically Active Directory.
  • Knowledge of virtual machines and backup software.
  • Ability to lead training for city employees.
  • Skill and ability to serve as a public speaker and trainer/teacher.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Microsoft Windows desktop operating system and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge with VoIP phone systems.
  • Skill in LAN/WAN troubleshooting.
  • Skill and ability to troubleshoot software and hardware problems quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with end-users, industry professionals, and vendors.
  • Skill and ability to research complex errors.
  • Ability to learn quickly and be able to apply new ideas and concepts to the real-world work environment.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to follow established department procedures.
  • Ability to keep current on technological issues.
  • Ability to write clear and understandable directions.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with appropriate discretion.

MACHINES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Computers, keyboard, mouse, multi-function printers, plotters, UPS's, hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, utility knives, utility cart and phone.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate degree or relative experience in a technology-related field with knowledge of current Windows operating systems. Must pass employer-required background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in information technology-related field, or four years of experience in a technology position.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is usually performed in a typical office environment although travel between multiple workplaces, including the wastewater treatment facility, is required. Spends extended periods of time sitting and moving about and performing a variety of physical movements such as crouching/kneeling, pushing/pulling, and lifting. Some work tasks are accomplished in cramped or confined spaces and at low heights within buildings. Some potential for exposure to electric shocks while working on computer hardware.
