Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Germanna Community College is seeking an Instructional Designer. The Instructional Designer will provide andragogical and educational technology support for the college’s rapidly changing instructional environment while pioneering innovative advancements and advocating for learner interests. The position serves as a consultant to faculty, staff, and instructional divisions regarding the:

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Integration of technology into curricula,
  • Development and implementation of tech-enhanced facilitation,
  • Quality design of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses,
  • New and continuing faculty development and training, and
  • Innovative technologies for teaching and learning (i.e., new tool rollouts, AI applications, adaptive learning platforms, etc.).

This position also serves as an advocate for learner-centered applications, making data-informed decisions to provide learners with quality design, instruction, and support.
The position plays a vital role in ensuring equitable access to high-quality learning by supporting the college-wide integration of instructional technologies and coordinating professional learning opportunities for faculty. This individual will champion inclusive course design through the application of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, helping to ensure that instructional materials and strategies effectively reach and engage all learners. The Instructional Designer serves college-wide and reports directly to the Dean of Online Programs and Learning Support.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Higher Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in instructional design, instructional technology, or faculty development. Preference will be given to candidates with experience spanning course design, academic technology support, and faculty development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design theory and its application in higher education settings
  • Ability to effectively communicate instructional methods and design strategies across multiple teaching modalities, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats
  • Proficiency with technologies used in distance education, including multimedia tools and web-based platforms
  • Advanced knowledge of learning management systems, particularly Canvas
  • Familiarity with web applications, content creation tools, and instructional development environments
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn and apply, generative AI tools to support teaching and learning
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills to support faculty, academic leadership, and instructional initiatives
  • Experience with or willingness to learn AI Tools

Additional Considerations
  • Two or more years of teaching experience in a postsecondary setting
  • Experience supporting faculty through course design, instructional technology integration, or professional development
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical and pedagogical concepts to diverse audiences, including students, faculty, and staff
  • Working knowledge of quality and accessibility frameworks such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Quality Matters, or other models that support inclusive and effective instructional design
  • Experience with conference presentations, applied research, teaching, or community-based work that demonstrates ongoing professional engagement and currency in the field
