Description

The Criminal Branch prosecutes misdemeanor criminal cases from court offices located throughout Los Angeles. The Regulatory Division focuses on code enforcement and regulatory matters, with an emphasis on enforcement against illegal cannabis activity in the City. The Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney works closely with local law enforcement agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, California Highway Patrol and numerous city, county, state, and federal regulatory agencies to prosecute crimes occurring in the City of Los Angeles.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Investigator will assist prosecutors and other investigators in the gathering and preparation of evidence for trial, probation violation hearings, and other contested hearings by:

  • Locating and subpoenaing witnesses and victims;
  • Conducting interviews and testifying in court;
  • Taking photographs of the scene and of witnesses and preparing diagrams and trial exhibits;
  • Working with law enforcement, the courts, regulatory agencies, medical facilities, and other City departments and personnel to obtain relevant property or business information, medical and court records, communications, recordings, photographs and other potential evidence;
  • Preparing clear, written investigative reports and detailed witness statements;
  • Assisting with grant reporting duties, when applicable, by tracking and collecting grant data and providing periodic updates pursuant to the grant reporting cycle;
  • Working collaboratively with Criminal Branch prosecutors and other employees of this office, law enforcement, other City departments and personnel;
  • Maintaining and updating current information in all necessary databases;
  • Operating a City vehicle to conduct surveillance and similar operations;
  • Conducting moving and stationary surveillance using video equipment;
  • Using applicable databases and other sources to research relevant information, including, but not limited to business ownership and organization, business histories, bankruptcies, business and professional licenses, litigation histories of ongoing or past lawsuits, and property ownership histories through title history reports and public databases.
  • Using applicable databases and other sources to identify, gather, and investigate financial records, accounting statements and other forms of business records to determine income, assets, liabilities, wages, taxes, and other financial information of individuals and businesses; and
  • Performing other investigative duties for the Criminal Branch as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of investigation procedures.
  • The position requires a self-motivated, quick learner who can exercise independent judgment and is capable of working with minimum supervision. Applicants must also possess impeccable ethics, excellent organizational skills and pay close attention to detail. Applicants must have the ability to work and communicate well within a team environment involving employees of this Office, other agency personnel, and members of the public.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the ability to express ideas orally and in writing in a clear, organized, and persuasive manner.
  • The hours for this position are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, subject to operational needs.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality are mandatory.
  • A valid Driver’s License.
  • This position may require occasional lifting of items up to 25 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Applicants must possess impeccable ethics, excellent organizational skills, and have the ability to work well with attorneys and staff of this Office, personnel from other agencies, and members of the public.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in the area of criminal law and/or civil litigation. Proficient personal computer skills and use of Word, Excel, Google, Adobe and Lexis/Westlaw.

Current Location

Position is subject to assignment at any Criminal Branch office or location within the County of Los Angeles.


Probation

For external applicants – Appointment to this exempt position (non-Civil Service) will be subject to a one-year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successful completion of the one-year probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
