Irrigation Specialist/SW

Position Summary

Operate and maintain large, self-contained irrigation systems including backflow controls, underground piping, valves, wiring, sprinklers and controllers; perform soil moisture analysis checks and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Work in and around high traffic city median areas and travel city-wide.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

  • Operate and maintain large, self-contained irrigation systems including backflow controls, underground piping, valves, wiring, sprinklers and controllers; make rounds of the turf and median/ streetscapes sites to determine watering needs for the day and check for broken lines, heads and other parts.
  • Observe and make corrective adjustments in the operation of pumps and water lines, ensuring proper pressure and coverage.
  • Troubleshoot and repair inoperative controllers, valves, lines, sprinklers and related equipment; overhaul sprinkler heads and valves as required to ensure proper and reliable service.
  • Check computer for water settings at each course and change the settings if needed; adjust automatic controllers to ensure proper soil moisture content for the growing of healthy turf.
  • Create and update printout of watering procedures for troubleshooting purposes; plan and implement repairs to improve the water systems.
  • Apply fertilizer to median/ streetscapes; apply chemicals to turf areas; apply weed control chemicals to desert areas; document use of chemicals.
  • Repair irrigation pipes and sprinklers as needed and assist in upgrading the irrigation system; level sprinklers and valve boxes.
  • Order necessary parts for repairs; perform a variety of repairs including broken lines, sprinkler heads, leaking valves, and broken wires; raise or lower sprinkler heads and valve boxes; report repairs to higher-level supervisory or management staff.
  • Monitor and track irrigation operations using required software and other metrics; maintain and ensure systems are functional.
  • Maintain and review irrigation software data for validity and accuracy; regularly review data, maintain lists, logs, records, files and data as required.
  • Perform minor field electrical repairs to controllers, electric valves, lines and other irrigation components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on turf and median/ streetscapes sites, check for proper operation of safety devices.

SUPPLEMENTALFUNCTIONS:
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • May prepare reports as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours vocational training in landscaping or ; and

Two (2) years’ experience performing irrigation system maintenance and repair.

ADDITIONALREQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
May be required to work weekends/holidays/odd days off/shift work


Working Conditions

Environmental:
Exposure to loud noises, dust, vibrations, all weather conditions and hours of the day; traffic, high speed roads, heavy vehicles; work in the vicinity of high voltage electrical equipment; travel site to site.

Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for light to moderate lifting and carrying and standing, walking and sitting for prolonged periods of time.
