STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Summary of Job Classification:
Leads the Legal Team of the State Court Administrator’s Office for the Colorado Judicial Department and assists the State Court Administrator in the operations and strategic direction of the Judicial Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Advises the Chief Justice and State Court Administrator directly on legal matters impacting the Judicial Department.
  • Provides executive direction to the legal counsel unit.
  • Serves as in-house counsel for Judges, Court Executives, Chief Probation Officers, and other Judicial Department personnel.
  • Provides technical legal advice to managers, supervisors, and other Judicial Department personnel in order to avoid or minimize legal liability for the Colorado Judicial Department.
  • Conducts legal research. Analyzes and interprets laws, rules, court rulings, pending legislation, and regulations for clients.
  • Researches unique legal issues impacting the Judicial Department by identifying applicable statutes, judicial decisions, and rules.
  • Advises clients on legal aspects of administrative and operational issues.
  • Prepares and provides training on legal issues for Judicial Department personnel.
  • Supervises and coordinates activities of subordinate legal unit personnel.
  • May provide guidance on ethical issues to judicial officers.
  • Participates in the overall management of the Judicial Department with the Senior Leadership Team of the State Court Administrator’s Office.
  • Attends meetings and completes training as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities:
Work requires managing and monitoring work performance by directing multiple groups of employees across more than one business function within an organization unit, including making final decisions on hiring and disciplinary actions, evaluating program/work objectives and effectiveness, and realigning work and staffing assignments, as needed. The work performed by the majority of employees is complex.

Human Collaboration:
Communications and discussions result in decisions regarding policy development and implementation. Interaction with others outside the organization requires exercising participative management skills that support team efforts and quality processes.

Fiscal Responsibility:
Position has moderate fiscal responsibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Equivalency:
Graduation from an accredited law school.

Work-related Experience:
At least eight (8) years of work-related experience in practicing as an attorney in the field of law.

Licenses and Certifications:
Certificate of admission to the Bar of the State of Colorado.
Active license to practice law before the courts of the State of Colorado.

Preferred Qualifications:
Colorado Judicial Department experience is preferred.

Physical Effort Requirements:
Exerts up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.

Work Environment/Locations:
Relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Office environment.

Exposures:
Individuals who are hostile or irate.
