Junior Staff Accountant

EXPECTATION FOR ALL EMPLOYEES:

Support the mission, vision and values of United Way of Delaware (UWDE) and Delaware 211. When appropriate, participate in various after hours and weekend activities that benefit UWDE and Delaware 211 and the community. Due to the leadership role UWDE is called upon to play in the community, it is the expectation that all UWDE staff will be fully engaged in community meetings, events and activities.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Junior Accountant supports and performs accounting duties for both UWDE and 211. The main areas of responsibilities include, but are not limited to, applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) that include analytical work, thorough reviews of financial records, performing account reconciliations, assisting with the audit preparations, program budgets and reporting. Performs day-to-day, monthly and year-end operations of the Finance Department.

To be successful, the person in this role should have a solid working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and strong financial analysis skills. The candidate should also possess strong Excel skills, be detail-oriented, highly organized, and be able to work with little to no supervision and perform under pressure. Accounting software experience is required.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the Accounts Payable function, including processing invoices, verifying approvals, maintaining vendor records, preparing payment runs, and ensuring timely and accurate payments in accordance with organizational policies and procedures. Assist with campaign pledges, payments and other entries are properly accounted for within the General Ledger and campaign system

Assist with the Accounts Receivable process, including preparing and issuing invoices, recording receipts, monitoring outstanding balances, following up on delinquent accounts, and supporting cash application activities.

Prepare monthly account reconciliations and financial analyses for assigned general ledger accounts, investigate and resolve discrepancies, and provide supporting documentation to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records. This includes bank reconciliations.

Support year-end financial close and audit preparation, including preparing schedules and workpapers, performing account analyses, reconciling balance sheet accounts, gathering supporting documentation, and assisting with auditor requests to ensure an accurate and timely year-end reporting process.

· Assist with ensuring effective internal financial controls are maintained in compliance with GAAP, United Way Worldwide, and UWDE policies and procedures and all legal or statutory requirements

· Assist with Grant and Program budgets, ensure invoice/cash collections, payments and reports are done timely and accurately.

· Assist with the production of cash flow analysis

· Assist with annual audit preparation

Education

Associates degree minimum, Bachelor's degree preferred in accounting or finance or equivalent work experience

Skills

  • 1-2 years of accounting experience.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP.
  • Knowledge of MIP and Paylocity software a plus.
  • Strong financial analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel.
  • Ability to multi-task, manage changing priorities, and work well under deadlines
  • Ability to work across the organization with diverse levels of colleagues and stakeholders
  • Ability to work with little to no supervision.
