POSITION SUMMARY: The K4 Teacher is responsible for a classroom of children 4-5 years of age. The Teacher will work collaboratively with his/her partner Teacher to ensure the successful operation of a classroom. The Teacher, along with families and colleagues, works to achieve meaningful progress for each child along his/her own unique developmental path and toward the United Community Center’s school readiness goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Teacher will ultimately be evaluated on a combination of skills, dispositions, and behaviors, some of which are related to the specific service area of this position and others that represent the general expectations of all United Community Center employees.

  • Uses knowledge of the principles of child growth and development to work with children and communicate with families, internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide emotional support through establishing a positive climate, being aware of and responsive to children, and encouraging child expression and autonomy
  • Establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment.
  • Use strategies for behavior management, such as clear behavior expectations, being proactive and redirecting misbehavior
  • Encourage the involvement of the families of the children in a Early Learning program and supporting the development of relationships between children and their families.
  • Share pertinent information with Family Advocate ensuring coordinated services to meet the needs of individual children and families.
  • Participate in case conferences as appropriate.
  • Foster classroom productivity and maximize learning time, while engaging children with a variety of modalities and materials
  • Provide instructional support through concept development, fostering children’s analysis and reasoning, engaging in feedback loops, and modeling and supporting high-quality language
  • Performs any and all other duties as assigned.
  • Comply with all Health and Safety polices including ensuring no child is left alone or unsupervised by staff, consultants, contractors, or volunteers while under my care

  • Multitasking – the teacher and the children may make many requests of the early childhood assistant at the same time, so juggling and prioritizing are necessary
  • Discretion – though privy to a variety of information about each child, early childhood assistants need to maintain confidentiality and respect privacy
  • A bachelor’s degree and current Wisconsin DPI teacher licensure are required. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills. The candidate should be able to work independently with little direct supervision, work as part of a team, accept responsibilities, and be self-motivated. Must display effective multi-tasking and time management skills.
  • Physical exams and background checks are required for this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

keeping up with active children requires good stamina, and much of the day can be spent on one’s feet. Being able to lift children is helpful, as is sufficient manual dexterity to deal with small items such as buttons on coats.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is generally performed in an office environment. Noise level in the work environment is moderate to occasionally loud. The employee will frequently be required to stand, walk, and occasionally run in most weather conditions. The employee may occasionally be required to fulfill responsibilities in extreme climates and temperatures (i.e., playground assistance and supervision).

  • Ability to sit most of the time with some bending and reaching.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend most of the time.
  • Ability to engage in the repetitive movement of wrists, hands, and fingers – typing and/or writing.
  • Ability to work frequently at close visual range (i.e. preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting,
  • transcription, computer terminal, extensive reading).
  • Ability to receive and respond to oral communication.
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
  • Work is generally performed in an office environment.
  • Ability to work frequently go up and down stairs.
  • Noise level in the work environment is moderate to occasionally loud (examples: business office with computers and printers, light to moderate traffic, human voices).
  • Standard office equipment generally used includes: Telephone, Personal Computer (monitor, keyboard, and mouse) or Tablet, Printer/Photocopy Machine, Calculator, and Fax Machine, May be required to operate a motor vehicle during duties.
  • May be required to travel within UCC Schools buildings to participate in trainings such as but not limited to professional development.
