Position Overview
The Lab In-Charge / Lab Supervisor will oversee the daily operations of the geotechnical laboratory, ensuring all testing is conducted efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with relevant standards (ASTM, BS, AASHTO, ISO, etc.). This role includes staff supervision, equipment maintenance, quality assurance, and coordination with clients and project engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Management
- Supervise and coordinate daily lab testing activities (soil, rock, aggregate, concrete, asphalt, etc.).
- Assign tasks and monitor performance of laboratory technicians.
- Ensure proper sample logging, labeling, and record-keeping.
- Testing & Quality Control
- Review and validate test results and data sheets before submission.
- Ensure adherence to quality management systems (ISO/IEC 17025).
- Oversee calibration and maintenance of testing equipment.
- Conduct periodic internal audits and corrective actions.
- Technical & Safety Compliance
- Ensure all testing conforms to ASTM, BS, or relevant standards.
- Implement and monitor health, safety, and environmental protocols in the lab.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory.
- Client Coordination
- Communicate with clients and project teams regarding sample status and test results.
- Support project engineers with technical clarifications and reporting.
- Assist in preparing laboratory test reports and summaries.
- Team Development
- Train and mentor junior lab staff and technicians.
- Promote a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
- Experience: Minimum 2–5 years of experience in a geotechnical or materials testing laboratory, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficient in soil and material testing methods (Atterberg limits, compaction, CBR, triaxial, direct shear, consolidation, etc.).
- Familiarity with ASTM, BS, and AASHTO standards.
- Knowledge of calibration procedures and QA/QC documentation.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong leadership and communication abilities.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
