Landfill Attendant

Position Summary

Perform waste screening and traffic direction duties and activities at an assigned landfill, Intermediate Processing Facility or Convenience Center within the Solid Waste Department; clean and maintain work area and equipment; assist with recycling efforts and provide assistance and direction to disposal facility users.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.


  • Screen incoming vehicles for adherence to a variety of landfill regulations including hazardous waste and transport rules and regulations.
  • Direct traffic; give assistance to vehicle operators as necessary; maintain and install disposal facility signs as necessary.
  • Load and unload trash and refuse from refuse collection trucks and loaders; provide loading and unloading assistance to customers.
  • Answer telephones and provide requested information to callers regarding the disposal facilities.
  • Clean and maintain work area; sweep and mop office and straighten office materials.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  • May operate a variety of light to medium equipment and machinery to include a front end loader and a chipper.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED; and

Two (2) years of disposal facility operations, custodial services, customer service, or parking attendant experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Environmental:
Field and disposal environment; work around heavy equipment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, potentially hazardous chemicals, waste and infectious materials; inclement weather conditions.

Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy lifting; walking, standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time.
