Maintenance Technician

Position Title: Maintenance Technician FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


Responsible to: Director of Buildings and Grounds Supervises: none

Terms of Employment: 8 hours/day 260 days/year


Evaluation Period:

  • Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per WCS Performance and Assessment Procedures.
  • Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1.


Purpose of the Position:

To provide students, faculty, and staff with a physical learning environment that is safe, functional, comfortable, and aesthetically attractive.


Minimum Requirements:
The following are the qualifications and minimum requirements necessary for a person to perform this job.

  • Must be team oriented and able to effectively deal with people.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts or be called out after hours.
  • Must be willing to operate heavy machinery if needed.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the fundamentals of Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC and Machinery.
  • Candidates are subject to criminal background checks as well as periodic checks of their driver’s license.


Essential Functions of the Position: The following functions have been determined by Wa-Nee Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Buildings and Ground performs a variety of maintenance and repair work relating to the operation and maintenance of buildings and structures. Performs administrative work pertaining to the maintenance program and is expected to exercise good judgment in completing work assignments

o Use tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices.

o Adjust functional parts of devices or control instruments, using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, or straightedges.

o Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, or the physical condition of the numerous buildings does not deteriorate.

o Order parts, supplies, and equipment from catalogs and suppliers, or obtain them from storerooms.

o Assemble, install, or repair wiring, electrical or electronic components, pipe systems, plumbing, machinery, or equipment.

o Inspect drives, motors, and belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, or perform other maintenance actions, following checklists.

o Repair or replace defective equipment parts, using hand tools and power tools, and reassemble equipment.

o Clean or lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, or other parts of machinery.

o Inspect, operate, or test machinery or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions.

o Dismantle devices to access and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools.

o Plan and lay out repair work, using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals, or schematic diagrams.

o Perform general cleaning of buildings or properties when necessary.

o Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.

o Operate cutting torches or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.

o Maintain and repair specialized equipment and machinery found in cafeterias, laundries, stores, offices, or factories.

o Provide grounds keeping services, such as landscaping and snow and ice removal from drives and sidewalks as needed.

o Paint or repair roofs, windows, doors, floors, woodwork, plaster, drywall, or other parts of building structures.

o Deliver supplies to each building in the district.

o Install electronic equipment i.e. projectors, TVs, and interactive whiteboards.

o Pull wiring for data and communication.

o Attend to emergencies when necessary.

o Support and enforce all school policies and governmental regulations such as OSHA/IOSHA rules, school health and safety regulations and guidelines, etc.

o Operate any and all grounds keeping equipment.

o Repair and maintain equipment to existing corporation standards

o Monitor inventory of supplies for routine maintenance and inform the Director of Building and Grounds.

o Troubleshoot problems involving equipment or field conditions.

o Assist in the upkeep of the corporation storage building.

o Assist head custodians with special projects.

o Support and enforce policies established by the Director of Building and Grounds.

Secondary Functions of the Position: The following functions, while important and necessary to the position, have been determined by Wa-Nee Community Schools to be marginal to the successful performance of this position.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed or as directed by the Director of Buildings and Grounds and Superintendent.


Knowledge of:

  • Policies, procedures and functions of Wa-Nee Community Schools Board of Trustees and the Indiana Department of Education
  • Applicable software and applications


Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, and schedule priorities.
  • Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems.
  • Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.


Equipment Used:

  • Mechanical tools and equipment.


Place Where Work is Performed:

  • All Wa-Nee Community Schools buildings


Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
  • Must be able to lift items of 50 lbs. regularly/100 lbs. occasionally.
