Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Learning, the Manager of the Circulation and Information Services Desks in the W.E.B. DuBois Library, supervises and coordinates the services provided by the unit. Services include information, technical, reference and circulation support. Information Services staff cover multiple shifts, including early morning, evenings and weekends, and some holidays.
Essential Functions
Provides leadership and direction for all aspects of the unit, including the supervision, training, evaluation, and performance management of unit staff. Advocates and champions unit needs to library administration.
Develops staff schedules to ensure that the library remains open during scheduled hours. Assists in covering the service desks when necessary. Assists with the hiring and supervision of student employees and oversee student employee budgets.
Collaborates with library leadership to develop policies and procedures relevant to providing optimal user services. Interprets policies and procedures for students, faculty, and staff, as necessary.
Communicates and works closely with library facilities personnel in monitoring the physical space of the DuBois Library. Responds to emergencies and other incidents by interfacing with police or other campus entities. Works with Information Technology to maintain and ensure efficient use of public computers, laptops, printers, and other equipment.
Monitors and manages the collection of departmental metrics and statistics for unit success and national reporting requirements.
Other Functions
Contributes to the planning of library public programming.
Represents the unit in UMass Amherst Library meetings and committees.
Works collaboratively with peers in the Science and Engineering Library, other DuBois Library units, in addition to those in the Five Colleges Consortium as appropriate.
Performs routine office duties with minimal physical demands.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of customer service experience, preferably in a library environment.
Demonstrated supervisory skills.
Ability to establish work priorities, set performance expectations, achieve goals, and direct work in an evolving work environment.
Strong oral and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a library.
Experience working in a union environment.
Experience using Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
Additional Details
Report to the Associate Dean for Research and Learning.
Number of staff directly supervised: 10
Supervises student employees.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a standard office or indoor university environment and involves minimal physical exertion.
Work Schedule and Work Arrangement
Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours per week.
Salary Information
Pay Grade: PSSAP Grade 27
