Summary of the Role
The Technical Sales Manager is responsible for leading, managing, and developing a team of technical sales professionals. This role requires a strong combination of sales leadership, deep technical expertise, and customer relationship management to achieve sales targets and maximize revenue from technical solutions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sales and Strategy Leadership
- Target Achievement: Develop and execute strategic sales plans to meet and exceed revenue and sales targets for technical products/services within an assigned territory or market segment.
- Sales Process Management: Oversee the entire technical sales cycle, from initial client engagement and needs assessment to proposal delivery, contract negotiation, and closing the deal.
- Forecasting and Reporting: Accurately manage sales pipelines, generate sales forecasts, and report on team performance and market trends to senior management.
- Market Analysis: Stay current on industry trends, competitor activities, and emerging technologies to inform sales strategy and product positioning.
2. Technical Expertise and Client Engagement
- Technical Consulting: Provide hands-on technical guidance and expertise to the sales team and key clients.
- Solution Design: Collaborate with engineering, product development, and R&D teams to ensure proposed solutions are technically feasible and meet customer requirements.
- Presentations and Demos: Prepare and deliver compelling technical presentations, demonstrations, and product workshops that clearly articulate the value proposition of the company's offerings.
- Proposal Development: Lead the technical response to Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and create detailed, tailored proposals and statements of work (SOWs).
3. Team Management and Development
- Recruitment and Coaching: Hire, train, mentor, and coach technical sales team members (e.g., Sales Engineers, Pre-Sales Consultants) to enhance their technical knowledge and sales effectiveness.
- Performance Management: Set clear individual and team KPIs, conduct regular performance reviews, and implement development plans.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the primary liaison between the technical sales team and other departments like Marketing, Product Management, and Post-Sales Support.
Required Qualifications & Skills
Education
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical/scientific discipline, or a Business degree with significant technical experience.
Experience
5+ years in technical sales, sales engineering, or a related field, with 1-3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
Technical Skills
Deep understanding of the specific industry's products, architecture, and technology (e.g., cloud computing, enterprise software, network security, or industrial machinery). Proficiency with CRM software (e.g., Salesforce).
Soft Skills
Exceptional Leadership, Team Management, Communication (verbal and written), Presentation, and Negotiation skills. Proven ability to build strong, long-lasting customer relationships and resolve conflicts.
