Marine Superintendent

Marine Superintendent is a shore-based senior role in the maritime/shipping industry. The professional oversees the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of a fleet of vessels (tankers, bulk carriers, offshore vessels, etc.). In the UAE, this role is common with companies in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, often involving oil & gas, logistics, or ship management firms.

A Marine Superintendent acts as the main link between ship and shore. Core duties include:

  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure vessels comply with ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC, ISO, and UAE Federal Transport Authority (or local port authority) requirements. Oversee audits, inspections (PSC, Flag, Class, SIRE, etc.), and corrective actions.
  • Vessel Operations & Seaworthiness: Monitor day-to-day performance, navigation standards, cargo operations, crewing, and technical condition. Ensure vessels are properly manned, maintained, and equipped.
  • Audits & Inspections: Plan and conduct regular ship visits, internal/external audits, and prepare vessels for vetting, dry-docking, and surveys.
  • Incident Management: Investigate accidents/incidents, root cause analysis, and implement preventive measures. Participate in Emergency Response Teams.
  • Crew & HR Management: Authorize senior officer selection, performance appraisals, crew logistics, training, and promote safety culture.
  • Maintenance & Budget: Oversee planned maintenance, dry-docking, repairs, and cost control.
  • Communication & Liaison: Act as the primary contact for ship masters, flag states, classification societies, P&I clubs, and internal departments. Promote good ship-shore communication.
  • Environmental & Quality: Monitor HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) performance, drug/alcohol testing, and quality standards.
  • Other: Support vetting processes, risk assessments, and continuous improvement of marine operations.
