Medical Language Specialist

Schedule

Monday- Friday 11:00AM to 7:30PM, rotating holidays

General Summary

Participates in editing, quality review, workflow monitoring and issue resolution for dictated medical and imaging reports for all WellSpan Health entities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible to ensure accurate and timely transcription/editing of medical and imaging reports for all WellSpan Health entities.
  • Plans and prioritizes workload at the beginning and throughout scheduled shift, editing physician/APC/radiologist dictated medical/imaging reports, maintaining or exceeding established report turnaround times.
  • Proofreads all edited medical/imaging documents to ensure accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar; uses Spell Check. Maintains proper headings and signatures. Uses only WellSpan-approved abbreviations.
  • Maintains a minimum of 98% accuracy on all edited medical/imaging documents.
  • Meets all requirements regarding productivity standards.
  • Reviews and edits physician/Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) dictated medical reports as necessary (i.e. work type number, physician ID number, medical record number, contact serial number, business entity).
  • Frequently monitors Transcription system work queue to correct reports that have pended due to errors, blanks, carbon copies, and missing information for documents edited by outsourced transcription company.
  • Sends STAT requests from a physician/APC and/or another department to outsourced transcription company upon request.
  • Edits dictated imaging reports identified on the work list in the Imaging Transcription system. Proofreads reports and sends them to the Radiologist for review and signature.
  • Addends dictated imaging reports in the Imaging Transcription system when needed to comply with billing requirements.
  • Communicates with Lead Radiology Technician if there are questions regarding the scheduling of an imaging study.
  • Reports any Dictation/Transcription system issues to the Transcription Application Support Specialist.
  • Responds promptly to telephone and email requests utilizing proper telephone and email etiquette.
  • Complete the Daily Updates Email to all Medical Language Specialists regarding status of medical/imaging reports.
  • Maintains departmental policies and procedures. Makes recommendations for procedures as needed, using LEAN principles.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Associates Degree Preferred

Work Experience:

  • 3 years Medical transcriptionist/editing experience. Required and
  • 1 year Transcription/editing quality assurance experience. Required

Courses and Training:

  • Medical Transcription Upon Hire Preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of various computer applications and software, including Microsoft Office, eScription and PowerScribe.
