Job Summary

The Medical Transcriptionist 1 transcribes dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals in order to document patient care.

Essential Functions of the Role

  • Transcribes confidential medical and non-medical dictation in prescribed formats. Uses designated computer, dictation, and transcription equipment as directed. Documents patient care and ensures continuity in care planning activities.
  • Interprets and transcribes dictation by physicians and healthcare professionals. This includes patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Completes tasks timely to meet production standards and follows established policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to English term usage to correctly document medical records.
  • Obtains additional information needed to ensure complete documentation of records.
  • Requests assistance to interpret dictation that is unclear or inconsistent, and/or makes use of professional materials in a timely manner.
  • Interacts with physicians and internal customers in a professional and courteous manner.

Key Success Factors

  • Word processing experience required.
  • Able to type 60 wpm with 85% accuracy required.
  • Demonstrates understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, signs and symptoms, medications and laboratory values.
  • Excellent listening skills, and oral and written communication skills required.
  • Certified Medical Transcription Certificate preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent level of education.
  • At least one year of previous work experience in a relevant field.
