MEP Engineer (Energy & Water Efficiency Specialist)

The MEP Engineer will be responsible for the design, planning, installation, and optimization of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within building projects, with a specific mandate to maximize energy efficiency, minimize water consumption, and significantly reduce operational utility costs. This role requires expertise in sustainable design practices, energy management systems, and a deep understanding of building performance optimization.

Key Responsibilities Mechanical Systems (HVAC Optimization)

  • Design energy-efficient HVAC systems that balance occupant comfort with minimal energy consumption.
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations and select high-efficiency equipment, such as variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems or geothermal heat pumps.
  • Optimize ductwork and ventilation systems for optimal air quality and efficient air distribution to reduce energy waste.
  • Incorporate smart controls and Building Automation Systems (BAS) to manage climate control based on real-time occupancy and usage data.

Electrical Systems (Power & Lighting Efficiency)

  • Design and implement efficient electrical power distribution systems to reduce electricity losses.
  • Specify and install energy-efficient lighting solutions, including LED fixtures, motion sensors, and daylight harvesting systems to minimize artificial lighting needs.
  • Integrate renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, into the building's power grid where feasible, and manage battery storage solutions.
  • Ensure the use of smart building technologies and automated controls to optimize overall energy use.

Plumbing Systems (Water Conservation)

  • Design water supply and drainage systems that minimize water consumption without compromising functionality.
  • Specify and install low-flow fixtures in bathrooms, kitchens, and other facilities.
  • Implement alternative water sources and recycling systems, such as rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling, to reduce reliance on potable water and associated heating costs.
  • Ensure all piping is properly insulated to improve system efficiency.

Energy Management & Sustainability

  • Conduct comprehensive energy audits and performance modeling to identify energy-saving opportunities and establish baseline consumption data.
  • Develop and implement sustainable design strategies that reduce the building's carbon footprint and ensure compliance with green building certifications (e.g., LEED or BREEAM standards).
  • Perform retro-commissioning on existing buildings to restore or improve system performance and efficiency.
  • Liaise with utility providers to understand rate structures and optimize building operations to minimize utility charges.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Proven experience in designing and managing MEP systems, with a strong portfolio of projects demonstrating significant energy and water savings.
