Metal Fabricator

Role Summary

Fabricate, assemble, and weld precision metal structures and components used in industrial automation systems, special-purpose machines (SPM), conveyors, robotic cells, and equipment frames. Ensure dimensional accuracy, structural rigidity, and alignment required for moving mechanical systems.

Core Responsibilities: Precision Fabrication & Assembly

• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, GA layouts, and assembly diagrams.
• Fabricate machine frames, gantries, conveyor structures, guards, and mounting brackets.
• Maintain squareness, flatness, parallelism, and alignment.
• Fit linear rails, bearing housings, motor mounts, gearboxes, and actuator brackets.
• Perform drilling, tapping, slotting, and precision hole alignment.

Welding for Machine Structures

• Perform MIG/TIG welding for mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
• Minimize heat distortion to maintain alignment and tolerances.
• Use stitch welding and controlled welding sequences for frame stability.
• Grind and finish welds where component mounting surfaces are critical.

Sheet Metal & Enclosure Fabrication

• Fabricate control panel enclosures, machine covers, guards, and cable trays.
• Work with sheet metal bending, hemming, and stiffening techniques.
• Ensure smooth edges and proper door alignment for panels.

Integration Support

• Assist assembly team during machine build.
• Mount pneumatic cylinders, sensors, brackets, and cable supports.
• Provide provisions for wiring routes and maintenance access.
• Modify components during machine trials and commissioning.

Machine & Tool Operation

Operate and assist with:

• Laser cutting machines
• CNC press brake
• Rolling & bending machines
• Drill press & tapping machines
• Grinders and finishing tools

Critical Skills for Automation Fabrication

• Ability to maintain tight tolerances and alignment.
• Understanding of machine rigidity and vibration control.
• Knowledge of tolerances for linear motion systems.
• Distortion control during welding.
• Accurate use of precision measuring tools.

Tools & Measuring Instruments

Must be proficient with:

• Vernier caliper & micrometer
• Try square & combination square
• Dial gauge & straight edge
• Spirit level & alignment tools
• Thread gauges & feeler gauges
• Knowledge Requirements
• Linear motion systems & bearing mounting basics
• Pneumatic component mounting practices
• Motor & gearbox mounting alignment
• Surface flatness and vibration reduction
• Modular machine design concepts

Qualifications

• ITI / Diploma in Fabrication, Welding, or Mechanical field preferred
• 2+ years in machinery or industrial fabrication
• Experience in SPM / conveyor / automation builds is a strong advantage
