The Multimedia Specialist role is a new addition to the Curatorial team. This creative and detail-oriented role will play a critical part in capturing, producing, and managing digital content that amplifies NMAAM’s mission and enhances visitor engagement. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills in photography, videography, and graphic design, coupled with a passion for storytelling and cultural preservation.

This position supports a wide range of projects, including recording and editing digital diaries, documenting artist visits, and creating multimedia assets for exhibitions, events, and marketing campaigns. Additionally, the Multimedia Specialist will contribute to NMAAM’s Roots and Streams expansion project, which leverages interactive software to develop kiosks and digital signage deployed nationwide, forming the foundation of a subscription-based archive of digital assets.

As NMAAM activates its five-year digital and AI expansion plan, this role is expected to grow into a full-time position.

NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of the many music genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. The Museum will share the story of the American Soundtrack, integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Content Creation & Editing

  • Record and edit digital diaries for archival and interactive use.
  • Capture candid photography and video during artist visits and special events for archival, social media, and marketing purposes.
  • Produce high-quality multimedia assets (graphics, videos, animations) to support exhibitions and museum programming.

Event & Marketing Support

  • Design digital graphics and visual content for museum events, campaigns, and promotional materials.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Curatorial teams to ensure brand consistency across all media.

Roots and Streams Expansion

  • Assist in developing interactive kiosks and digital signage for national deployment.
  • Support creation and organization of digital assets for a subscription-based archive.

Collaboration & Innovation

  • Work closely with the Curatorial team to align multimedia projects with exhibition narratives and interpretive goals.
  • Contribute creative ideas to enhance visitor engagement through digital storytelling.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Multimedia Design, Digital Media, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2+ years of experience in photography, videography, and multimedia production.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects).
  • Experience with video editing, motion graphics, and digital asset management.
  • Familiarity with interactive software and kiosk design is a plus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong visual storytelling skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Interest in African American music, culture, and history preferred.

All Staff Duties:

  • Serves as leader to assure strong communications between NMAAM and all external constituents.
  • Actively seeks to learn the history of NMAAM.
  • Supports and promotes the museum’s mission.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special events.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

  • Bending and kneeling to capture content, with long periods of standing and walking
  • Light lifting and set up of audio-visual equipment
