The position
Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan (AKHS, P) is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to take on the role of Nursing Director, based at Aga Khan Hospital, Gilgit. The incumbent will be responsible for advancing patient safety and quality healthcare services across all clinical units. This country-wide leadership position reports to the Chief Executive Officer for enhancing quality of nursing practices and to the Head of Clinical Units for nursing operations.
Position Summary
The Nursing Director will be responsible for directing and transforming the nursing services of AKHS, P by developing and implementing strategic nursing policies, programs, and quality standards, ensuring the delivery of safe, compassionate, and clinically excellent patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Champions nursing quality assurance initiatives and infection control programs in compliance with ISO and SafeCare standards, leading audits and reviews to drive continuous improvement and ensure a safe healthcare environment.
Directs the development and implementation of nursing policies, procedures, and budgetary plans in alignment with AKHS, P's mission and international regulatory standards.
Aligns nursing objectives with institutional goals through close collaboration with Medical, HR, Finance, and administrative leadership.
Leads the recruitment, performance management, professional development, and retention strategies for the nursing department.
Oversees the delivery of all nursing care, ensuring adequate and responsive staffing, compassionate patient care, and effective supervision.
Integrates nursing education into service delivery by implementing mandatory and advanced training programs (e.g., BLS, ACLS) to ensure continuous skill development.
Represents the nursing department in problem-solving and policy-forming discussions with internal leadership and external stakeholders, including government agencies and community partners.
The requirements
Qualification and Experience
Master’s degree in nursing from a recognized Institution with valid nursing license from Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC).
A minimum of 8 years of progressive nursing experience, with a proven track record in senior administrative or leadership roles.
Skills and Competencies
Proven expertise in implementing healthcare quality standards (ISO, SafeCare/JCIA) and clinical quality indicators.
Knowledge of modern management principles in hospital operations, finance, and administration.
Capacity to manage the mental and physical demands of an acute clinical environment, including exposure to standard clinical hazards and highly distressing circumstances.
Demonstrates strong leadership, people management, and team-building skills with a professional demeanor and collaborative mindset.
Exhibits resilience and professional maturity in handling clinical emergencies and difficult situations, with the ability to prioritize tasks and maintain impeccable integrity.
An empathetic leader committed to ethical practice, patient confidentiality, and AKHS, P values, with a proven record of reliability and a positive attitude.

The Nursing Director, accompanied with his/her Line Manager(s) is expected to identify and understand which aspects of his/her work have most impact on the environment, and define tasks, work, and personal goals within his/her work plan to reduce these impacts and bring AKHS closer to net zero.
