Job Description

The Public Works Department is currently seeking a part-time Office Assistant to serve as the welcoming face of our department and support daily front desk operations.

The Public Works Department plays a vital role in keeping Chesapeake running smoothly. From trash collection and roadway maintenance to traffic signal operations, stormwater management, bridge and facility maintenance, and major construction projects, Public Works provides essential services that impact residents every day.

Job Duties
As the 3rd floor receptionist for Public Works, you will serve as an ambassador for both the Public Works and Development & Permits Departments. Primary responsibilities include:
  • Answering and directing calls through a multi-line telephone system
  • Greeting visitors, residents, contractors, and City employees in a professional and friendly manner
  • Providing information, assistance, and directions while upholding the City’s CARES standards of Courtesy, Attentiveness, Resourcefulness, Empowerment, and Stewardship
  • Assisting with general office support duties such as typing, scanning, scheduling appointments, filing, and mailing correspondence
  • Supporting department operations and helping ensure a positive customer experience for everyone who visits or contacts the department

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED/HSE.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of six months of full-time equivalent experience in administrative support.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
This position requires excellent customer service and communication skills and some experience operating a multi-line telephone system. Training will be provided on the telephone system and standard office procedures and policies.

The City’s normal business hours are from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday; Currently, we are looking for someone to work the afternoon shift (1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.).
