Operations Director

Role Summary / Purpose
The Operations Director leads day-to-day and strategic operations within the aerospace repair shop, reporting to the General Manager. This role provides senior leadership across Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, Lean/Continuous Improvement, and People leadership to ensure full regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and sustainable growth.

The Operations Director drives a safety-first culture, delivers on customer commitments, improves productivity and reliability, and builds a high-performing team aligned with PTI’s Leadership Behaviors: Act with Humility, Lead with Transparency, Deliver with Focus.

Essential Responsibilities

Safety
  • Champion a safety-first culture and ensure compliance with aviation regulations, EHS standards, and company policies
  • Lead the shop Safety Management System (SMS), including risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions
  • Review safety metrics with leadership and drive proactive improvement actions
  • Partner with EHS to ensure training, onboarding safety readiness, and emergency preparedness
  • Conduct safety audits, leadership walks, and continuous safety reviews
Quality
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and customer requirements (FAA, EASA, OEM manuals, internal procedures)
  • Partner with Quality to maintain approvals and certifications and prepare for audits
  • Drive a zero-defect mindset using structured problem solving and root cause analysis
  • Monitor quality KPIs and align improvement actions with plant priorities
  • Embed right-first-time execution into daily operations
Delivery
  • Own turnaround time (TAT), on-time delivery (OTD), and schedule adherence
  • Align capacity, staffing, and schedules with demand
  • Resolve operational constraints affecting delivery performance
  • Monitor delivery KPIs and communicate performance to stakeholders
  • Balance customer urgency, industrialization needs, and regulatory requirements
Lean / Continuous Improvement
  • Lead Lean deployment aligned with site operating systems
  • Implement standard work, visual management, and daily management routines
  • Sponsor improvement projects that impact Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost
  • Coach frontline leaders in Lean tools and problem-solving
  • Drive productivity, flow, and waste reduction while maintaining compliance
Performance & People Leadership
  • Provide direction to production managers and support staff aligned with plant goals
  • Translate business objectives into operational metrics and accountability
  • Develop leaders, build succession pipelines, and mentor key talent
  • Foster an inclusive, high-engagement culture with open communication
  • Lead performance management, coaching, recognition, and corrective actions
  • Partner with Training to ensure skills and certifications meet regulatory needs
Financial
  • Own operational P&L drivers including productivity, labor efficiency, and overhead control
  • Contribute to annual planning and forecasts with Finance and General Manager
  • Monitor and control costs including materials, scrap, and indirect spending
  • Lead cost improvement initiatives without compromising safety or quality
  • Provide clear operational and financial performance reporting

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Operations Management, Business, or related technical field, or equivalent experience
Experience
  • 10+ years of operations or manufacturing experience including aerospace, MRO, or regulated environments
  • 5+ years in senior operations leadership with people management responsibility
  • Experience leading in FAA/EASA regulated environments and supporting audits
  • Proven Lean/Continuous Improvement implementation experience
  • Demonstrated ability managing budgets and driving cost/productivity improvements
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-influence skills
  • Working knowledge of aerospace regulatory requirements

Preferred Qualifications

Education
  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Business (MBA), Operations, or related field.

Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in aerospace MRO, component repair, or engine/airframe repair environments, including interaction with OEMs and airline/defense customers.
  • Prior experience leading multi-shift operations or a similar-sized plant/repair shop, including union or works council environments where applicable.
  • Demonstrated success leading major transformations (e.g., footprint changes, productivity programs, new capability introductions).
  • Professional certifications in lean/continuous improvement (e.g., Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt), project management, or equivalent.
  • Experience with modern manufacturing systems and tools (e.g., ERP/MRP, MES, digital work instructions, quality management systems).
