ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, implement and manage annual CIP and operations budget
  • Perform annual soil tests to ensure proper nutrient applications through fertilization programs
  • Ensure proper operation of all irrigation systems through periodic testing and operations
  • Monitor and maintain all plant material, flowers, shrubs, trees, etc. in the park system
  • Properly supervise staff in all areas in turf grass management to include fertilization, pesticides, and irrigation
  • Interviews, selects, evaluate and counsels’ employees
  • Plan and organize daily maintenance schedules
  • Plan and organize best management practices for athletic fields
  • Implement annual turf-grass, pesticide, and fertilization programs
  • Plan and implement best mechanical practices as they relate to turf grass management
  • Effectively implement proper irrigation practices as they relate to turf grass management
  • Lead a group of individuals who may be employees, contractors and/or volunteers to accomplish assigned programs, activities, and athletic programs.
  • Coordinate, administer, implement, and manage of the park pavilions, baseball fields, soccer field and city pool
  • Coordinate or assist with City Sponsored Events
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Occasionally required to work outside normal work hours
  • A thorough understanding of quality-of-life issues as they relate to a parks system

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope
  • Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to inclement weather; water/wastewater; mechanical, electrical, chemical and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; and animals, snakes and poisonous insects
  • Required to comply with requirements for personal protective equipment
  • Operates a company vehicle daily

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License
  • 2 years’ experience in parks maintenance with 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Degree in Parks and Recreation
  • Ability to obtain a noncommercial pesticide applicator’s license with Vector endorsement in 1 (one) year

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Arboriculture
  • 5 years’ experience in parks maintenance with 3 years as a superintendent
  • A Texas Irrigators license

JOB FUNCTION: This position manages, operates and maintains parks facilities. This position is also responsible for seasonal practices to include maintenance and upkeep of all buildings, pavilions, playground equipment and other structures in the parks system. In addition, the maintenance of all landscape areas of City buildings and facilities is a responsibility of this position.
