Job Overview

Sentara is currently hiring a Patient Care Technician to work at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital on the Med/Surg 4 West Unit.

Hours/Shift:

FLEXI (as needed), night shift. 7pm to 7am

Department/Position Overview:

4 West is a 24-bed inpatient nursing unit. We provide quality care to adult medical/surgical telemetry patients who are acutely ill or injured. We specialize in post-operative surgical patient care. The most common types of clinical conditions include:

  • General surgery inclusive of emergent and elective
  • Davinci Robotic surgery for colon, urology, and gyn surgeries
  • Urology including TURB, continuous bladder irrigation, stent placement
  • Gynecology surgeries inclusive of bladder/colon resections
  • Vascular inclusive of amputations, femoral popliteal bypass, fistulas
  • Mastectomies and variable staging of breast reconstruction
  • Soft tissue traumas inclusive of gunshot/stab wounds, MVAs, chest tubes

Medical population includes:

  • Diverticulitis, crohns, ulcerative colitis, colitis, fistulas e.g. colorectal
  • Kidney injury, acute and chronic
  • Sepsis, pneumonia, asthma, diabetes

As a Patient Care Technician with Sentara, you will have the opportunity to learn many new skills. From taking vitals to blood draws and daily care. The primary duties of this position include supporting the admission/discharge process, changing, bathing ambulating patients, drawing blood, foley catheter care, meeting patient needs while working under the direct supervision of a nurse. You will find that teamwork is exceptional, with everyone working together to provide the best care for our patients.

Minimum Requirements:

  • One year of prior health care experience preferred.
  • American Health Associate BLS Certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and one of the following
    • Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
    • Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
    • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
    • National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
    • Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
    • Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or
    • Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of RN, LPN, RT or PT, or
    • Current work experience within last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant.
