Core Duties & Responsibilities

  • Inventory Management: Oversee the entire inventory lifecycle, including ordering, receiving, inspecting, storing, and issuing of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. This involves implementing inventory control measures like FIFO (first in, first out) or FEFO (first expired, first out) to minimize waste and monitor expiration dates.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all pharmacy operations comply with relevant local and national laws, regulations, and accreditation standards (e.g., State Pharmacy Council guidelines).
  • Operations Management: Manage the day-to-day workflow, including proper handling of controlled substances, maintaining cleanliness and organization of the store area, and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Staff Supervision and Training: Supervise, train, and schedule pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, technicians, and support personnel. This includes conducting performance evaluations and ensuring team compliance with policies.
  • Procurement & Vendor Coordination: Coordinate with suppliers and the hospital's purchasing department to ensure a steady supply of quality products, negotiate with vendors, and manage purchase orders.
  • Record Keeping & Reporting: Maintain meticulous records of all transactions, stock movements, and consumption patterns. Prepare regular reports on inventory levels, sales performance, and financial metrics for management.
  • Quality Assurance & Patient Safety: Participate in quality improvement initiatives, prevent medication errors by reviewing prescriptions, and ensure proper storage conditions (including cold chain items) to maintain drug efficacy and patient safety.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care and resolve issues related to medication supply.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy (B.Pharm) or a PharmD is typically required, sometimes supplemented by an MBA or Diploma in Supply Chain Management.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in a hospital or retail pharmacy setting, often with some experience in a supervisory or management role.
  • Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacy laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency in inventory management software and electronic medical records systems.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
