Philanthropy Officer

  • Manages a portfolio of 125 - 150 annual and major gift prospects.
  • Completes a minimum of 120 face-to-face visits annually, documenting activities, strategies, results, and next steps in Advance.
  • Provides consistent, donor-centered cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for alumni/ae and friends with a variety of professional and personal backgrounds.
  • Works closely with university and foundation staff to ensure full integration, engagement, and coordination with all fundraising activities in support of university and foundation initiatives.
  • Establishes credibility with the dean and unit leaders in CLAS that provides the foundation for strong partnerships in working with donors toward goals that benefit the college and are gratifying for the donors.
  • Listens effectively to donors, alumni/ae, and friends to discern how best to bring their hopes and goals to fruition in ways that complement the college’s objectives.
  • Assists in planning and implementing campaign-related fundraising initiatives.
  • Keeps abreast of private support needs and opportunities across the university generally, and specifically within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Deepens expertise by attending appropriate professional development opportunities through organizations such as CASE, AFP, or other networks in areas of responsibility.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3-5 years of relevant fundraising/sales experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated success in soliciting gifts or closing sales of $50,000 and above.
  • Proficient with Office 365 (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Google (Gmail and Workspace) tools, Adobe, Zoom, and database systems.
  • Experience in higher education or a non-profit environment.


On behalf of the University of Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Maine, the Philanthropy Officer will develop relationships with alumni and friends, leading to annual, major, and planned gifts. This Philanthropy Officer will work closely with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS). In this capacity, the Philanthropy Officer will engage regularly with the dean and leadership of the college, attend events and functions, manage a portfolio of donors and prospects who affiliate primarily with CLAS, facilitate productive relationships between the dean and prospective donors, and participate in general UMaine fundraising and event activities.
