We are seeking an experienced Accountant/Bookkeeper with proven expertise in the UK market to handle accounting, VAT, payroll, and tax compliance for all our UK clients. The role involves end-to-end bookkeeping, preparation and submission of VAT and payroll returns, client communication, and production of management accounts, ensuring full compliance with UK legislation and HMRC requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
VAT & Tax Compliance
- Registering, setting up, and deregistering companies for various VAT schemes, including Standard, Cash Accounting, Flat Rate, and Marginal VAT schemes.
- Preparing, reconciling, and submitting quarterly VAT returns to HMRC, including calculations for zero-rated, standard-rated, imports, exports, and acquisitions.
- Reconciling VAT control accounts, monitoring VAT deadlines/penalties, and responding to HMRC queries.
- Drafting corporation tax calculations and returns.
- Experience with VTT Final Accounts preferred.
Bookkeeping & Accounting
- Maintaining sales and purchase ledgers, setting up supplier and customer accounts, and processing invoices, credit notes, and payments.
- Allocating bank and cash receipts/payments to the correct invoices, and performing bank reconciliation, petty cash reconciliation, and expense analysis.
- Reconciling debtors, creditors, VAT, PAYE, wages, and suspense control accounts.
- Processing month-end adjustments, journals, accruals, and prepayments.
- Maintaining and reconciling fixed asset registers, calculating depreciation, recording disposals, and accounting for gains/losses.
- Producing trial balance, draft accounts, and monthly management accounts.
- Running year-end procedures in Sage to close and start new financial years.
Payroll Management
- Managing monthly payroll, including employer registration, employee onboarding, and creation of pay elements.
- Processing employee payments, generating payslips, and managing statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP).
- Recording absences, updating records for leavers and joiners, and making BACS payments.
- Producing payroll summaries, managing PAYE submissions, RTI reports, FPS, and EPS filings to HMRC.
- Handling year-end payroll processes, issuing P45s and P60s, and ensuring compliance with UK payroll legislation and tax bands.
- Preferred experience with Moneysoft payroll software.
Client Liaison & Administration
- Liaising with clients to request necessary documents, following up where required, and updating CRM systems (Bright Manager) with client information.
- Processing client data accurately and maintaining up-to-date records in line with company procedures.
Skills & Requirements:
- Proficiency in Sage 50 Accounts, QuickBooks, Excel, Sage 50 Payroll, Xero, VTT Final Accounts, and payroll software (preferably Moneysoft).
- Strong knowledge of UK VAT, PAYE, and payroll legislation.
- Excellent reconciliation, reporting, and analysis skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and manage deadlines.
- Experience using CRM systems, preferably Bright Manager.
