Key roles and responsibilities
- Sourcing and vendor management: Identify, evaluate, and develop a strong network of reliable suppliers for steel, sheet metal, and other components. Conduct regular vendor visits to assess quality, capacity, and relationship strength.
- Negotiation: Negotiate with suppliers on pricing, payment terms, and delivery schedules to achieve the best possible cost savings.
- Purchasing process management: Execute the entire purchase process, from generating purchase requisitions (PRs) and issuing purchase orders (POs) to tracking orders and ensuring timely delivery.
- Inventory control: Monitor inventory levels of raw materials and finished goods to prevent shortages or excess stock. Implement just-in-time (JIT) strategies to optimize inventory and reduce costs.
- Coordination with internal teams: Collaborate with production, quality assurance, and stores departments to understand material requirements and specifications.
- Quality assurance: Coordinate with vendors to ensure that all procured materials meet specified quality standards. This may involve coordinating inspections of materials and resolving quality-related issues.
- Documentation and compliance: Maintain accurate records of all purchase transactions, pricing histories, and supplier performance. Ensure all procurement activities adhere to company policies, legal requirements, and industry standards.
- Cost analysis and reporting: Analyze procurement data and market trends to identify cost-saving opportunities. Generate periodic purchase reports for management review.
Required skills and qualifications
- Experience: 2–5 years of proven experience in a purchasing or procurement role, preferably within the steel, sheet metal, or automotive manufacturing industries.
- Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of steel grades, sheet metal components, fabrication processes, and other related technical specifications.
- Negotiation skills: Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills to build and maintain strong vendor relationships.
- Software proficiency: Competence in using ERP systems for purchase order management, as well as Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).
- Analytical skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to evaluate supplier proposals, perform cost-benefit analyses, and resolve supply chain issues.
- Educational background: A bachelor's degree in commerce, engineering, or supply chain management is often preferred. A diploma with relevant experience may also be considered.
