Job Summary:

Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit is growing! A well-established and leading real estate tax firm focusing on the appeal of single-family homes and homeowner associations is seeking a full-time Paralegal for our Chicago, IL office. Must have strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Must be comfortable working independently yet be a team player. Must be able to efficiently manage multiple projects and exercise good judgment in dealing with highly confidential matters.

The starting hourly role for this position is $35.72, contingent up level of experience. Business hours for this non-exempt position are 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. The position requires a minimum of 60-90 days of in-office training. After successfully completing this period, the role will transition to a hybrid schedule. The requirement will be discussed more during the interview process.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and distribute tax appeal proposals for new clients.
  • Prepare assessed valuation complaints and supporting documentation on behalf of clients.
  • Review appeal documentation for accuracy; scan, profile, and archive materials in document management system (iManage).
  • Obtain Property Index Numbers (PINs) from appropriate sources.
  • Maintain and update assigned tax databases to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist attorneys with large document productions and other related projects.
  • Conduct legal research, cite checking, and contract review.
  • Prepare Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and opinion letters.
  • Collaborate with multiple attorneys and clients, providing regular status updates.
  • Draft, finalize, and submit appeal documents for Condominium, Homeowner, and Townhome Associations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in property tax work required.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and filing tax appeals before the Cook County Assessor and Board of Review.
  • Knowledge of the Property Tax Appeal Board (PTAB) processes preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; strong general computer skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access preferred.
  • Ability to type 50+ words per minute with at least 90% accuracy.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work independently when needed.
  • Experience with document merging.
