Overview

The research associate position will support ongoing research projects in the laboratory of Dr. Mahalia S. Desruisseaux. The research associate will conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, maintain laboratory operations, and contribute to the execution of the studies. The Desruisseaux laboratory primarily focuses on endotheliopathy resulting from infectious organisms, particularly in regard to the cerebral endothelium. The research associate will work primarily on a project investigating the contributions of HIV and opioid use on cerebral endotheliopathy and subsequent neurocognitive impairment. They will conduct laboratory experiments using approved protocols used in our laboratory including cell cultures, and small animal models.

The research associate will collect, organize and analyze experimental data and maintain accurate detailed laboratory records. They will also assist in the development, optimization, and documentation of experimental protocols. They will maintain laboratory equipment, manage inventory, ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards, prepare reagents, samples, and reports for external presentations. They will work closely with students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and other research staff. They will also contribute to manuscript preparation, abstracts, and grant-related materials as appropriate. They will participate in lab meetings, internal and external research conferences, and training sessions as appropriate. They will also perform additional research-related duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to perform independent laboratory experiments in basic and pre-clinical research and contribute to the larger experimental workflows.
2. Ability to perform cell cultures, molecular biology, biochemical assays, small animal research and tissue processing as appropriate.
3. Ability to maintain laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and reagent inventories and insure adherence to institutional biosafety, animal research, and regulatory requirements.
4. Participate in experiment planning and refinement under the supervision of Dr. Desruisseaux, including acquiring and analyzing experimental data and assisting in interpretation of scientific findings.
5. Contribute to the preparation of scientific reports, manuscripts and grant materials.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. Advanced Education: Master's degree or higher in a related scientific discipline with additional training or certifications in relevant fields.
2. Specialized Experience: Demonstrated prior lab and research experience with cell-based and small animal models of disease and with data analysis software.
3. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, and ability to work independently and as part of a research team, and a commitment to maintaining a high standard of scientific integrity and reproducibility.
4. Evidence of contributions to prior publications, abstracts, or research presentations.
5. Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
