Research Scientist, The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Center

At the University of Virginia, investigators in the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research (Carter Immunology Center) seek a fundamental understanding of how the immune system works. If they can determine, on the most basic level, how the immune system distinguishes between healthy and harmful cells, this could lead to revolutionary new treatments and cures based on controlling the immune response.


Position Summary

The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Research Center (CIC) at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine seeks a Research Scientist to perform sophisticated experimental research in the areas of immune regulation of lung injury, recovery and chronic disease development following infection. The successful candidate will participate in a multiplicity of relevant lab projects and in writing study reports for the study sponsors, papers, and grant applications and is expected to develop research programs as time permits. The incumbent will also be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings and CIC-related seminars, as well as work with graduate students, technicians, fellows and collaborators in the laboratories involved in the project.

Responsibilities

  • Full-time research and/or scholarship at the University

  • Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career

  • Supervised by a senior scholar; and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship

  • Strong time management and communication skills

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Assist with maintenance and upkeep of laboratory, as applicable

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

Note: Research Scientist positions are for candidates who have obtained their PhD and have a MINIMUM of 3 years postdoctoral experience.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Requires a doctoral degree or master's degree with significant experience.


Preferred Qualifications

The candidate should be highly motivated to develop new research avenues; and should have excellent written and oral communication skills. Intensive experience in small animal procedures, flow cytometry, molecular biology and immune cell purification and culture, etc. Experience in molecular biology, microscopy, cellular immunology, T cell biology, lung biology, murine models of disease, and human samples is preferred.


Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

  • This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
