The Washington State Attorney General&rsquo;s Office&rsquo;s</b> <b>Discovery Division (DSD) has opportunities for an experienced attorney.</b> The attorney in this position will act as discovery counsel to the Office and its Divisions, working with a dedicated team of experienced attorneys and paraprofessionals to identify and develop guidance, policies, and practices for the benefit of the AGO and its clients. The Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section (HRSP) protects the American public and U.S. interests by investigating and prosecuting certain complex international immigration and violent crime cases over which the U.S. has jurisdiction. As part of its work, HRSP leads Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA), which marshals the investigative and prosecutorial resources of the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, to enhance U.S. enforcement efforts against the most prolific and dangerous human smuggling and trafficking groups operating throughout the Americas. Additionally, JTFA investigates and prosecutes those who engage in sponsorship fraud or the abuse and exploitation of unaccompanied alien children, who are brought across the border without a parent or guardian and can fall prey to smuggling, sex trafficking, sexual assault, and forced labor. JTFA partners with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices in border districts and elsewhere to prosecute cases and is supported by personnel from other Criminal Division sections. This joint team of specialized prosecutors (in addition to analysts and law enforcement personnel) significantly enhance investigations and prosecutions of the most significant leaders, organizers and facilitators of these networks by targeting individuals and organizations both inside and outside the United States.

Job Description
<br><br>
The Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice is seeking qualified, experienced trial attorneys for the Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section (HRSP), located in Washington, D.C., to serve on Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA), the Attorney General's priority task force initiative, to investigate and prosecute the leaders and organizers of cartels and transnational criminal organizations involved in human smuggling and trafficking crimes throughout the Americas that impact the safety and security of our nation's borders and communities.
<br><br>
<b>As a JTFA Trial Attorney at HRSP, the incumbent will:</b><br>
Investigate and prosecute complex, proactive cases involving human smuggling and trafficking federal offenses and related complex immigration crimes, along with other activities related to violent crime and transnational organized crime, to include material support for terrorism, kidnapping/hostage taking, sexual assault and abuse, fraud, narcotics trafficking, weapons trafficking, offenses involving minors, and money laundering.
<br>Collect evidence utilizing a myriad of techniques and tools, to potentially include Title III wiretaps, undercover law enforcement activities, and foreign-based evidence.
<br>Advise and consult with HRSP/JTFA leadership and others on the status of all cases and matters.
<br>Build and enhance relationships with partner Assistant United States Attorneys and prosecutors from other Department litigating components and offices to pursue human smuggling and trafficking investigations and prosecutions.
<br>Develop and maintain relationships with federal, state, local, and international law enforcement agencies and prosecutor counterparts that investigate and prosecute human smuggling, trafficking and related cases.
<br>Advise federal prosecutors and law enforcement in developing investigative and prosecutorial strategies. Such advice will include providing guidance concerning search and seizure warrants, criminal and civil forfeiture allegations, international law enforcement coordination, indictments, and other pleadings.
<br>Support the coordination and sharing of information and evidence between law enforcement offices to maximize the effectiveness of the Department’s investigations, prosecutions, and forfeitures involving human smuggling, trafficking and related cases.
<br>Interact with a variety of personnel from federal law enforcement agencies across the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and elsewhere, as well as the intelligence community and other organizations on cases and various projects and issues related to human smuggling and trafficking.
<br>Qualifications
<br><br>
<b>Required Qualifications:</b><br>
Interested applicants must possess a J.D., or equivalent, degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and be an active member of the bar in good standing. To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, applicants must have at least four (4) years post J.D. legal experience, one of which was specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-14 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: independently performing legal analysis; composing pleadings, briefs and other court documents involving unique and/or difficult legal issues in civil or criminal litigation; conducting highly complex civil or criminal litigation; and leading paralegals and support staff.

<b>Preferred Qualifications:</b><br>
Knowledge of and experience with federal human smuggling and trafficking statutes, immigration law, and/or other federal violations relating to cartels and transnational organized crime.
<br>Prior experience working on international criminal cases.
<br>Experience working in or with U.S. Attorneys' Offices.
<br>At least two (2) years' trial experience as a prosecutor or trial attorney handling criminal matters.
<br>Experience investigating criminal matters involving complex or sensitive law enforcement techniques.
<br>Spanish-language fluency is helpful but not required.

The Criminal Division is responsible for investigating and prosecuting criminal cases in the U.S. District Court. Located in the nation's capitol. The division has jurisdiction for a broad range of consequential cases, including violent crime, child exploitation, human trafficking, drug trafficking, fraud, government corruption, cybercrime, terrorism, sanctions violations, espionage, and other threats to D.C. and the nation.

The Criminal Division is accepting applications for attorneys to serve as line and supervisory AUSAs in the Criminal Division.
<br><br>
The Asset Forfeiture Unit utilizes criminal, civil, and administrative tools to punish and deter criminal activity by depriving criminals of property used in or acquired through illegal activities and to recover assets that may be used to compensate victims. The caseload involves matters across all criminal sections, whether in partnership with a criminal AUSA or as an independent matter.
<br><br>
The Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking (CEHT) section handles a broad range of matters related to internet-based crimes against children as well as human trafficking prosecutions. CEHT primarily investigates cases involving the production of and trafficking in child pornography, commercial sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and interstate domestic violence and stalking offenses. CEHT AUSAs are often involved in interviewing victims of sexual abuse or trafficking, coordinating with law enforcement agents to charge and arrest targets, and drafting search warrants for electronic evidence.

The Federal Major Crimes (FMC) section prosecutes a range of federal crimes, with a focus on high-tempo arrest-driven prosecutions or reactive investigations. FMC prosecutes the prohibited possession of firearms and controlled substances, violent crime sprees and crews, robberies, destruction of government property, and other federal crimes in the District of Columbia. As their experience increases, FMC AUSAs have the opportunity to partner with and support AUSAs in other sections in the Criminal Division.

The Fraud, Public Corruption, and Civil Rights (FPCCR) section handles complex and challenging prosecutions intended to address a range of white-collar crimes. FPCCR prosecutes fraud offenses against government agencies, including health-care fraud, tax fraud, and federal program fraud; frauds targeting businesses, non-profits, and social institutions; money laundering networks perpetrating frauds against financial institutions and online through cryptocurrencies; and cyber-enabled frauds (such as ransomware) and crimes (such as hacking to steal funds/crypto and information). FPCCR prosecutes public corruption offenses, such as bribery; conflicts of interest; theft of government funds; election crimes; and efforts to obstruct or interfere with the lawful functioning of Congress, the Judiciary, and Executive Branch. This section also prosecutes civil rights offenses, such as crimes based on protected characteristics.

The National Security (NS) section investigates and prosecutes criminal activity that threatens our nation's security, including: international and domestic terrorism; hostage-takings and other violence against Americans outside the U.S.; export control and sanctions violations; espionage, malign foreign influence, and transnational repression; unauthorized retention or disclosure of classified information and national defense information; and cyber offenses targeted at the U.S. government or perpetrated by those connected to state actors or terrorist organizations. The section is looking for applicants who are willing and able to handle the breadth of the section's practice; particular preference will be given to those applicants who have demonstrated an interest and skill in investigations involving cryptocurrency, cyber crimes, or criminal or civil forfeiture.

The Violent Crime and Narcotic Trafficking (VCNT) section disrupts and dismantles criminal networks engaged in serious violence and large-scale firearms and drug trafficking. VCNT places an emphasis on proactive, intelligence-driven, long- and medium-term criminal investigations, and our prosecutions focus on violent street crews, transnational criminal organizations, and the district's drivers of violence. VCNT's prosecutions target everything from criminal street gangs to international drug cartels engaged in a broad range of federal offenses, including firearms and narcotics conspiracies, interstate robbery conspiracies, RICO and VICAR, darknet market drug trafficking and money laundering, and Continuing Criminal Enterprises. VCNT AUSAs advise and coordinate with law enforcement agencies on investigative steps and sequencing; draft search warrants and other legal process; present cases to the federal grand jury; brief and handle detention hearings and other hearings in court; and prosecute cases through trial.
