Job Description
<br><br>
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is unique in the size and the scope of its work. It serves as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. On the local side, AUSAs assigned to the Superior Court Division prosecute cases in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia ranging from misdemeanors to homicides, and appeals of those convictions are argued in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals (DCCA). On the federal side, AUSAs assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute federal crimes in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and appeals of those convictions are argued in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. AUSAs assigned to the Appellate Division argue the direct appeals of all criminal convictions in both the local and federal Courts of Appeal. AUSAs in the Special Proceedings Division handle post-trial litigation involving habeas claims, record sealing, and other requests for extraordinary relief in the trial courts. The Civil Division further defends the United States in civil suits brought in the District of Columbia.

The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is accepting applications for attorneys to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Office's Appellate Division. The position involves significant legal writing responsibilities, including preparation of internal memoranda, briefs for trial courts and the courts of appeals, and other court filings. Appellate AUSAs will participate in moot courts and handle oral arguments before the appellate courts. Appellate AUSAs may also assist in trial-level litigation in cases of unusual complexity or importance.

AUSAs must possess the qualities necessary to excel in their mission to enforce the laws of the District of Columbia and the United States. These qualities include advocacy and communication skills; superior writing and analytical skills; the ability to manage a high-volume docket; and dedication to duty. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, investigative agencies, witnesses, and crime victims. They must also demonstrate their willingness to meet the high ethical standards expected of prosecutors in their interactions with opposing counsel and the courts.

The Justice Project provides support to grassroots racial justice campaigns seeking not simply to reform, but to wholly dismantle systems that criminalize and incarcerate people of color. We aim to help impacted communities define the terms and control how peace is realized in their streets and neighborhoods and to re-imagine public safety for themselves.</p>

The staff attorney focuses on developing relationships with racial justice organizations to support their campaigns and build power in their communities. This work may include identifying and recommending how to respond to legislative and legal developments, providing legal research, litigation, analysis, and writing. The staff attorney will provide support to grassroots partners and collaborate with and across teams to do so.</p><br>

The staff attorney will investigate racial justice issues related to the wholesale transformation of the criminal legal system, including through data, anecdotal, and other factual collection, and analysis in the communities where our partners work. This role also assists investigations and litigation efforts, including discovery, motion writing, coordinating litigation tasks with co-counsel, and working with our plaintiffs and organizing partners. The attorney may also assist with legislative efforts, including analyzing and drafting language for bills. This role is part of a team of attorneys that researches and analyzes policies, laws, and regulations on assigned issues in support of grassroots partners and Advancement Project&rsquo;s overall mission.</p><br>

The primary responsibility of the Families Together Staff Attorney is to provide high-quality, culturally humble and trauma-informed representation for parents and caregivers. The Staff Attorney position will be co-located at Community of Hope, a leading provider of health care to children. Community of Hope&rsquo;s Family Health and Birth Center provides comprehensive health and social services to families with a special focus on serving pregnant parents and their babies. Community of Hope has sites in Wards 5,7 and 8 &ndash; the communities with the largest number of low-income children in the District of Columbia.</p><p>
The Staff Attorney will join the Community of Hope teaming model, which provides each pregnant person with coordinated care from family advocates, social workers, community birth workers and community health workers. The Staff Attorney will manage a case load of approximately 20-25 cases and advocate - both in and out of court - to provide interventions that support and stabilize families.</p><p>
In addition to carrying a case load, the Staff Attorney will conduct legal education trainings for parents, caregivers, community members and Community of Hope staff. In this role, you will provide general support to the Legal department by drafting and negotiating contracts, conflicts analyses and litigation-related work involving experts, document management and collections. You will:</div><div>
